I have taken a few pictures with my Samsung Galaxy S6 and am really impressed with the results. Coin photography can be a trying exercise for me. I don't want to invest in a DSLR setup, so I have been taking pictures with an older Canon A590 point and shoot. I have a newer Canon (SX260HS) point and shoot which in theory is a much better camera, but it has never taken great coin pictures.

I was shooting my latest purchase, a 1915-S Lincoln yesterday. Here's a quick shot I got through the slab with the Galaxy S6:

Here is the same coin shot with the A590 for my Dansco 7100:

Granted, the A590 photo is trying to capture 3 coins at once which involves compromises on lighting and focus, but the S6 photo blows the A590 one away in my opinion. And I didn't even really put much effort into the S6 photo while the A590 photo is the best of about 12 different shots.

I think I will need to add a project to re-photo my collection sometime this winter.

Surprisingly good for a phone cam. What kind of lighting did you use?

I have 20W halogen under counter lights that I installed in my kitchen. I shoot with the coin on about a 30 degree slant from flat and it seems to capture the luster well.
