Here is a coin that exhibits a similar polished surface.

DBM has a point about the Caribou and it does make sense unless this is some kind of exception to the rule which I'm starting to doubt. But will have to wait and see...

Coinhunter - yes I see how the dollar is polished and doesn't even appear to have hairlines...

One of the biggest problems facing younger and or novice collectors and even dealers, is how extremely difficult it can be to identify
Original surfaces or what is known as " Original skin" . After you examine thousands of coins it becomes second second nature, but in the beginning it is a real learning curve..... This 1957 is no way an original coin it has been played with.

The 1936 dollar is definitely polished and everyone should see that.

I still see the 1957 differently.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it still looks PL to me.

The 1957 quarter looks completely different to the 1936 $1.

I agree doubleeagle59, the 36 dollar doesn't show striations like the 57 quarter and the shine isn't the same but I have seen silver dollars polished before.

The photography and lighting is different but the coins do exhibit some similarities (at least to me). The surface on both coins looks to blended in. With respect to the striations visible on reverse, these are in different directions in different areas of the coin. Also, if you look on the obverse of the coin around the shoulder and neck area you'll notice some bumps. This area often shows sign of wear that on this coin seems to have been smoothed out. Also note the softened bag marks on both coins. Usually a result of polishing. This could very well be a PL coin but even if, I really think someone wanted to give it a little extra "buff"....

I think you are absolutely right. Just received the coin and will get up some new pics in the next day or two. There is wear on the obv. that doesn't show in the original pics. A little disappointed but que sera, sera with coin collecting.

Haven`t had time to take some decent pics but I just saw this listing on ebay and the coin appears proof like with striations and I don`t think this one was cleaned. It`s a 1958 only one year later than mine.

That 1958 listing is NOT PL it is a business strike from a very highly polished die pairing .1958 is a year where you get this effect frequently. It is quite hard to find nice Cameo contrast business strikes in either 1957 or 1958.

Looks like an original PL but not sure the surfaces haven't changed...
