Hi guys I have a stupid question I am going month end on a week holiday to the coast about 300 miles from my house. I am planning to take them with me because I don't want unwanted guests to steal them. so my question is do you have any ideas how to transport the loose coins like dimes, quarters ect I know they are "junk" silver not worth more than melt but they mean the world to me, hate the word junk silver IMO it's not. Thanks

you should store them in coin rolls, either paper or plastic, and then just keep them in a briefcase or some other bag that is lockable.

Thank you ace, I have a few prescription bottles, might put cardboard between each coin. I actually made a leather bag just for this purpose because when we leave the house for any reason I put my coins in it, but I had only slabbed coins now I have loose coins which I must also take with.

I think the collection would be far safer at home than with you. Stealing luggage is all but an international industry that is easier than house breaking.

We are travelling by car so it will always be on my person, we even delayed the monthly shopping just because of the fear of burglary coming home with nothing is not to bad, coming home with NO food that is another thing lol. burglary is a very very common thing here

Kind of a tuff decision as to how to hide coins. And remember that Leather has been treated with chemicals so that too could effect your coins. If you plan on keeping any coins in a Leather item, I suggest you look into Zip Lock Plastic Bags. Put your coins in them first and then in the Leather case. If the rear seat of your car is easily removable, you may want to put valuables there.

Just go rent a deposit box or some sort of secure lockup for the month. If burglary is that common, then so is street crime. Tourists are a magnet for criminals everywhere.

I don't know how big your collection is, but if you have been able to carry it then it might just fit into a safe or lock box.
My thinking is that you should lock it in a small safe or lock box and lock that in a storage locker.
However, I do believe that nothing will really stop a truly determined burglar.
Take pics and make a list of what you have. Homeowners insurance might cover a small collection.

Have you considered putting the coins into screw top jars and burying them ? Most thieves are lazy and digging holes isn't high on their list

Trout, I have actually lol I bury my cash my "extras" don't ask. .... I have a strawberry patch quite big so it gets used a lot, but then we are never away from home more than a day or so, I even bought a big house plant for that I don't have all my coins in one place, they are in different locations at all times and I change it regularly to change it up......metal detecting anyone? The treasures in my yard is plentiful hehehehe

Luckily I live in an area that doesn't have a break in problem and I live a mile or so off one of the back roads so there aren't too many people aware that there is actually a house here I have also lived in this area for most of my life and have a reputation for dealing harshly with "Miscreants" so anyone who would steal from me would have to be very brave or very stupid

The new trend here is to put coffins by your gate the people here are very superstitious so they avoid the coffin houses hehehe but that's only on the farmsteads.

In that case... put them in a coffin.
Just kidding. I think at least a package that doesn't scream 'coins' should be a good idea. I don't know where in Suid-Afrika you are but given that you're 300 miles from the coast... Joburg? I remember crime is horrible there and I remember how I was strictly advised to not even walk from my hotel to the shopping center in Sandhurst/Sandton. I also remember the huge walls and security around houses.
The pill package sounds like a good idea. Just wrap the coins individually in paper or so, just so they don't get scratched and they don't make a sound.
I fully agree with you on the term 'junk silver'. Something precious metal isn't really 'junk', I'd say.

Spot on Ultrarant joburg, about 15 miles from sandton, and Sandton is the rich area that's why it gets targeted I an in a mostly industrial suburb but I will lock them up in a vault at work no one knows it will be there I have made out a file box of old invoices, the vault has a camera inside and there is 24 hour security so it's sorted for now South Africa is a very friendly country but if you have a family that is starving you will also steal to feed them. I am fortunate to have a very high level job, and no I am not a boss lol but it is a very very specialised career which is great pay and the hours is incredible work 2 dayshift 2 night shift then 4 days off so I work 16 days a month family time is great and you are never tiered! ,

I've visited more places than Joburg and I do remember that, especially outside that city, most people were very friendly and including (and the food was simply awesome throughout the country). I also remember that Joburg was by far the worst when it came to crime and crime prevention. (which, don't take it the wrong way, was also a hint in this case). Great that you found a solution! I hope you now can fully enjoy your trip to the coast!
