Maybe use a clean ice cream container and put the folders inside and wrap it under the tree?
I think you could knock off most of book 2 with 5 boxes of cents. You'd likely need to buy the steel cents and a few others of you want to give a full folder.. I'd also go for folder 3 that ends in 2013 or 2014
The other option is to buy the 3 folders and then buy some rolls of wheats online or a 500 count bag at a flea market, pawn shop or LCS in FL then give him a $25 box from the bank and the 3 of you can search together

One of your comments above leads me to think he probably said, "It's not like I had a 1914-D." Not trying to be a detective, but that leads me to think either the collection did not include Lincoln Volume 1, or that if it did, it may have had a fair number of gaps. Either way, I think it means you can do something meaningful without taking on getting a complete Lincoln set, which as has been noted, is very expensive. The nickles and dimes, as also noted, are much easier.
Here's a question for a moderator or older member (I read the rules and FAQ's and wasn't quite sure how to interpret): Since CoinMom4 clearly did not ask for anything, would it be OK if some members wanted to pass on some orphan coins for this project? It's a frequent topic around here to ask what to do with extra coins that are not needed, but we don't want to throw them away. We could post a note here to avoid duplicates. A variation could be that if CM4 starts hunting in bags, some good Samaritans might help with the holes that don't get filled. I always found it an interesting variation on the laws of probability that even some very high mintage coins hid themselves from me for a long time.
Let me emphasize that I'm very much open to being told this is not OK.

Quote: I'm positive he has not started collecting again in secret. I can't say for sure why he never did it again can only unfortunately venture to guess that being bottom deep in a liter of whiskey every night till I was in my mid 20s was more of his focus. Now as a decade sober grandpa he tends to just focus on other people's needs "to feel valuable". But with the big move coming for him maybe this gift will get him back into it and give him a hobby whilst he's retired in the middle of no mans land. I certainly understand that. This is a good thing that you are doing.

Yes, unsolicited giveaways are allowed. There are more than a few here who have benefited from such kindness. As long as the recipient accepts the offer, of course.

I would be willing to send some coins to you pro bono, but I would understand if you want to remain anonymous. Not sure how to get coins from Oklahoma to Florida without an address.
I love this story and want to see it fulfilled to the fullest.
PS, I'm sure you wouldn't, but don't post your address on this forum. Only by PM.

WOW you guys have made me cry !! That's is so sweet and thoughtful and amazing. I have no idea how to do a PM but am more than happy so send my address for those who want it. Right now I think I'm just going to focus on book Whitman #2 and #3 (1941-74 and 75 to current) I know I'm going g to miss some key dates. But that'll be ok. I'll get the extra books tonight so that I can start filling.

IMO Wait for an upgrade, CoinMom4. That's PMD and there are tons of '44 Philly cents out there to be had. (1.43B of the Philly mint strikes)
