Pics are a bit blurry. If it's a fake, it's certainly one of the better fakes I have seen. Compare with my 1799 dollar in similar condition:

Fake. The obverse has a wire rim, meaning that it was struck in a collar. Collars weren't used in the US until the 1830's

The third side frequently gets ignored on the bust coinage, does it have the appropriate edge lettering?

Looks like it was deliberately "slightly" disfigured as a deception. Agree fake, no way without papers.

I suspected cast at first, but the obverse looks to have a die clash. Would that show on a cast soin?

It could if the molds were made from a die clashed genuine coin. Likewise a cast con can show die cracks for the same reason. Die struck coins can show clashes and die cracks as well. (I've actually seen people say that a coin can't be a fake because it has a die crack on it. Even if it c=shows a crack that is KNOWN to come on a geniune oin the fact that your coin has that crack doesn't guarantee it is genuine. The fake die can be made from a genuine coin that had the crack and the fake die will have it as well.)
