It appears that the rim is displaced in 2 places. Is that related to the crack? Is it damage?

Looks like it is just spreading at this point in the dies life.

I don't think that I understand "spreading". I looked on error-ref and did not find it mentioned. If the die is spreading, it seems like there should be evidence of it somewhere else, also.

I am working on a theory that the crack, at the point where it reaches the rim, which would be the edge of the die at the point where the shoulder begins, turns and proceeds along the circumferential edge of the die thus causing it to break away from the rest of the die. I think this would explain what I see in the photos.

Spreading as in getting longer. Not splitting apart from the die. (not yet anyway)

I understand. The crack is spreading...like the crack from a windshield ding spreads across the windshield! Thanks.

When the upper crack continues to the edge above where it is now, then it will join the rim and eventually spread to make that area a Retained Cud, and eventually a Cud if the die is continued in use. You might check the obverse mint mark area and see if you can match up a reverse doe Cud for that die pair on cuds-on-coins.com

It looks to me as if it is an early stage (precursor stage - if there is such a thing!) of the developing Retained Cud RCD-1c-1954S-01R http://cuds-on-coins.com/lincoln-ce...09-1958-rcd/

My coin is the lighter color.

Very Nice Pete - I think it was great when you can find the earlier or later die stages of one already known or listed.

Retained Cud might be right. Check Cuds on coins site. Looks nice. It looks shiny because it was most likely replated.
