Not sure what else to call it.

Its a 1904 IH cent with Teddy Roosevelt punched through the obverse. Has a backing as you can see in the reverse picture. On the back it is stamped Pat. Aug 11, 1903.

Sorry for the blurry scan, the actual coin has very good detail, on the punch and the coin itself.

Despite the somewhat blurry pic, that's very interesting! Judging from the back, I think it was intended to be worn. It may have been made during Teddy's presidency, and I would say it's worth more than an avg. 1904 IHC

Yea, the pic is only blurry because the depth of the holder, my scanner will focus on what is closer. The coin itself has amazing detail on Teddy and its not some AG IH either.

It appears to have been fashioned into a lapel pin in apparently a patented process that was just invented, very interesting. I am guessing that the cent was either straight from a bank or freshly plucked out of change to fashion the pin. It might have been something that was given away or sold at political rallies. It probably doesn't have much worth as a coin but early political memorabilia(especially from popular presidents such as TR) is highly prized.

Thanks for sharing

Well, as far as value is concerned, this goes into my stash of IH pennies, I really love this piece.

So you think it is political memorabilia and not just a random "punching"?

It's sorta hard to tell exactly from the pic, but this looks very carefully made and I'll guess it's memorabilia from Teddy's time.
I agree with Biokemist6--political collectors would be very interested in this piece.

Biokemist, great history! Yes, as we can see, TR sure put his "stamp" on the cent! :D

TR was in the midst of an election campaign in 1904. TR assumed the Presidency in 1901 after William McKinley was assassinated but 1904 was his first time running for the Presidency and that is why I am pretty sure that this would be a campaign item.

Incidentally, TR was the one who killed the Indian Head cent so that Lincoln could be commemorated on a new cent for his 100th birthday. He also commissioned Augustus St. Gaudens to create new $10 and $20 gold coins. TR probably had more influence on US coinage than any other president.

Teddy also banned, "In God We Trust" from some coins as a blasphemous correlation between god and commerce. "In God We Trust" was reinstated on those coins by Congress in 1908.

My political button/memor encyclopedia does not have that pin in it. If that pin (can be proven it) was made in those days, it's a very valuable political button I would dissuade you from dumping in with your other coins.
