Hello, this is my first post - please be gentle!....

I found a 1989 50c COA in circulation and whilst I have done some investigation.... my question is this; I have a copy of the Renniks Aust. Coin & Banknote Values 26th Ed and for the 5c, 10c, 20c, $1 & $2 it states the years that are "Mint Packs Only" but for the 50c coin it states "no circulation 50c produced in 19** - Small quantities were made as Non Circulating Legal Tender". What does that mean exactly? Why the differing statement for the 50c coins alone? Can anyone give me an indication on what the 1989 might be worth?

Thanks

Some years (not just 50˘ either) were never released into circulation but were still made for mint sets. They do, for whatever reason, occasionally find their way into circulation.
Not worth a lot but interesting to find. I have sold some such on ebay and they fetch similar prices to uncirculated ones. I think collectors who make up sets of circulating coins like them as that then allows NCLT years to also be represented in a set -the philosophy is that an uncirculated one is not 'kosher' but one actually found from circulation is fine.

I have even found a couple of proof coins from circulation.

There were 150,602 mint sets produced in 1989 that contained this 50c coin.
They are not exceptionally rare and the survival rate for mint state coins is quite high given that many of these are still in their mint packaging.
However finding one of these in the Wild is quite an achievement and is nothing to sneeze at, Well found Mate

Like Jeff stated there are many different denominations that were only released in the mint sets, I found that out to my dismay when I first started to collect the decimal coins.

If you can get hold of a copy of either Macca's or Rennics (it doesn't have to be the latest issue) you will be able to see which years have the mint set only coins issued and what the denominations are
