I took my wife and 8 year old son to the Louisville coin show yesterday. I had three goals: find some reasonably priced BU ASE, find the 93', 96', & 08' ASE in proofs and try really hard to buy any Libertads I came across.

We did find all three of the stated ASE in proof and spent $52 apiece for the 96' & 08', the 93' proof was $68. Found a couple of BU Libertads that were $30 apiece, I passed on them.

I then went looking for BU ASE, almost everyone wanted $25-$28 apiece for these. I was blown away, silver is under $20 an ounce and many of these dealers were asking $30 for certain years. I finally found a 90 year old dealer who fought in the second World War and he sold me ten 16' ASE for $22 apiece. I felt like I got a great deal after asking about five other dealers their prices.

People looked at me funny when I asked if they had Libertads for sale. Several older dealers clearly were not even aware of what I was talking about. Interesting day ocerall, was shocked at the premiums on ASE.

I've yet to go to a coin show, though hope to attend my first later this year, but it would seem to me that most things would cost more than you can get elsewhere such as the reputable online sites or ebay. Sort of like the mom & pop stores competing against the big box ones. Is this right or is it different for coin collecting?

BTW, the coin show I'm looking to attend is the one in Houston. Being new to coin collecting the only thing I have limited knowledge on with regards to prices are ASE's and Libertads so just really looking forward to see what else is out there.

the reputable online sites or eBay

Some say these two are mutually exclusive.
