I have a small coin collection passed down to me that is just tossed in a gift bag. They are old circulated coins and after some research, I plan to buy the saflip Mylar holders on Amazon for some of them with plans to add to the collection over time.

Amazon also sells small narrow boxes to hold the flips, made with a choice of plastic or cardboard. Should I avoid plastic? It seems to be a no no for coins, tho I'll have mine in the flips.

I appreciate any other storage suggestions, dos or don'ts, or if there's another thread on the subject where I can learn. Thanks so much.

to the CCF!

Since your coins are going to be in flips I would think either the plastic or cardboard outer holder would be fine.
Do you have any pictures of your new collection you can share with us?
Rest in Peace

Stick with the Saflips. I use them.

A lot of people here use Wizard Coin Supply. Look under Coin Holders for the Saflips. The boxes are sold separately. Most everyone gets the cardboard boxes. If the plastic boxes are considerted "archival" quality they are probably okay but I find the cardboard boxes to work just fine.

To CCF , What ever plastics you use for your coins make sure they do not contain PVC which can harm the coins over time . I use cardboard 2x2's for long term storage .
keep your coins away from damp locations and extreme heat or cold . You can also store coins in clear plastic tubes.
( round with screw type caps )which I highly recommend. Some other members prefer the frosted square type tubes that are made of a softer plastic . you'll eventually find your own methods of storage for your coins .

Thanks so much for the quick replies and the welcomes.
Debra, I don't have any photos yet. I am waiting to get suitable storage for them before I handle them any more. Wow, I never knew that coins were susceptible to fingerprints, ect. I am learning a lot! Have a pair of cotton gloves I need to dig out.
Buddy, I have come across the Wizard Coin Supply in my early leaning of coins, so thanks for let letting me know they're reputable,

Saflips are specially designed to hold coins, so it can be considered a safe choice. I prefer those cardboard 2x2 flips myself, but I guess that's merely a personal choice.

As you are dealing with circulated coins, there's no real need to go through them with gloves, I'd say: most will be 'contaminated' with fingerprints and all the eerie stuff that those cause anyway. I usually wipe off any fingerprints before putting the coins in flips, especially when somehow a fingerprint found its way to an uncirculated coin, and I guess that's also a personal choice. Some people here would curse me for doing this...
