Quote: Doing the math, these are a deal from the mint, for the silver content. No other coins are offering 1 ounce of silver for under $100 - these ones are $80 - despite only $12 of face value (4 coins @ $3/ea)
Considering the price of silver is $25 CDN an oz, these coins are overpriced and not a deal. If you are looking at silver content only, might as well buy bullion coins.

It'd be funny if the mintage turns out to be super low. I'm guessing made to order and a bunch of extras.

If the $3 is to replace the 27mm $20for$20 it's better than nothing as we already have been informed RCM is working toward mitigating too many being cashed in. That beginning collectors and others who choose to limit their spending on NCLT can continue to buy a $20 NCLT, I think it's a very reasonable solution. It might perk their interest in other $3 27mm releases as well. The design of the Spirit of Canada is very creative, hope it doesn't get lost within the 27mm size.

Quote: Very small canvas for all that art, kinda busy. Quote: ...the heartwarming image of two youths playing Canada's beloved winter sport: Hockey. I thought it looked more like a father and son. That element looks out of place on this (overly) designed coin, I especially don't like the spider web they're skating on.

Possibly a smart move by the Mint. At $19.95, IMO it really is the same as a 20 for 20 without the risk of returns through the banking system.
The 20 for 20 mintages were all in the 200k plus range. It will be interesting to see if this coin reaches those numbers. If it doesn't, then that is good evidence that the 'exchange $20 for $20' marketing slogan used by the Mint for the 20 for 20s was very effective. Of course the problem (for them) was the redemption rate.
Then again, we may never know the mintage because the Mint failed to report mintages last year. I was promised by e-mail and phone message that the mintage numbers for 2015 would be made public 'soon' but that was over 4 months ago so I've given up holding my breath.

Quote: So, why could they not have put a face value of $20 instead of $3, and called this the next 20/4/20 coin? It would have made a great addition to the set. When I saw the coin at first, I too thought it was another $20 for $20. Certainly would have added some much needed inspiration to the current collection. At $19.95 with free shipping will this will probably be flying off the shelves as one of the few affordable Sesquicentennial related souvenirs the RCM has lined up for next year. I personally really like the design and think it will fit nicely with the 2015 Flander's Fields $3 coin priced at $30 or any of the Flag themed coins in my collection. I'm planning on ordering at least two and don't really care about redemption or that it's over priced for the silver content. This is not a bullion coin so why do so many 'collectors' insist as treating it as such? I've never heard of anyone walking into a car dealership and asking them to sell a brand new vehicle for the cost of the raw material alone. Sorry about my rant, just tired of hearing the same old argument that in my opinion is hurting not helping the hobby.

It certainly will be interesting to see how this coin does given the "unlimited mintage". Notice the RCM is already advertising it as suitable for gift giving. BTW, the packaging changed to a folder (sealed?) versus the previous $3 encapsulated coins in standard RCM clamshell.

The recent one shows all the specs of 20for20 series, including the packaging and finish. This is not gift...but more a "tip". When it 1/4oz silver, but face value CAD 20 and packaged nicely - this nice gift to anyone. The recent $3 will be good for guest from abroad....together with the bottle of fake Maple syrup and some key-chain made in China.

I understand what you're saying but I think the downside of XforX is that it's easy to be perceived as cash, as opposed to a memorable keepsake. If I want to give somebody $20, I give them a $20 bill maybe tucked inside an appropriate card to save them the hassle of figuring out how and where to redeem it. And yes, there's the chance that a $3 face value coin is equated to a $3 gift. I've come across a great many people who think it's absolutely outrageous to pay more than face value for any coin. For that reason it wouldn't make a habit of handing these out to strangers but in the reference to "gift" it's generally assumed the giver is personally known by the recipient.

I ordered two of the coins since it appears my rep went awol on me. Got the advance notification but no order form.
Any one else notice that the Mint accepts PayPal now?

There is no mintage on these. Disappointing.

Quote: There is no mintage on these. Disappointing. Why disappointing? The coin's final mintage will be based on actual demand for it and everyone who wants one will be able to get one. This seems like a good approach for an inexpensive coin designed to celebrate Canada as it nears its 150th anniversary. What's the downside?

I ordered mine mainly because of the 150th celebration year. But if the RCM drops the X for X format then my collection would probably stop there.
