That is the designers initials.

The initials are "AW" and are standard on all WL halves.
There are some 1941 proofs that are missing the initials because the Mint unintentionally polished them off.

If you are buying US coins like that I suggest buying a Red Book.

Hard to tell a grade without seeing both obverse and reverse.

If the obverse is as nice as the reverse, it could be a AU coin.

If it had a mint mark it would be on the other side of the coin
from the AW. It is a Philadelphia mint coin so no mint mark.

I think your seeing what might be a error on the designer initials.

It does look a little off .... not sure if it is a known error.

This is the obverse of the coin. Thanks GR58, sorry you are right its probably the designers initial not mint

The obverse looks great.

Now I am not sure ...
Either a slider AU 58 ... or a MS 63/64
