I think it is PMD. It appears that the coin was in a clamp which flattened the rim near the letters AV. I suppose once it was in the clamp someone tried to bend it and it cracked.

It's just a guess but it doesn't appear to be an error coin.

I agree with you Buddy.I didnīt notice the mark near the letters AV , that seems that was made,as you say , by a clamp or something else. The curious thing is that by sure the " PMD operation" was made many many years ago , because to do that thing now you need to be a little insane to spoil a coin of 140 years old.

I agree that the damage was done a long time ago. People used to take US coins from that era and use them to make buttons.

There's no way to know why someone did this to your coin but I am always curious about things like that.

Hello Buddy :
As I am also curious about things like that (I know people that uses to collect curious coins ) let me show you and the other guys in the forum this one Colombian 5 cents coin of 1974 :

Colombian-2-1/2-Cents-1881-:-Die-Crack--,-Die-Break-,-Lamination-Error,-PMD?
I donīt know the reason why somebody tried to convert this 5 cent coin in a 10 or 11 or 12 sides coin ...an artistic fact ?...to make it similar to another coin of more value ? ..or just ,as we use to say in Colombia, Ļlack of something to do Ļ ?.

The point is , and I think it was a really shame, he didīt realize that the damage that he caused was made in a doubled date coin, as you can see in the next pictures :

It does look like a crude attempt at art.

It is too bad that a coin with an error got damaged, but then it is kind of fun to think about why someone did it.

Why couldn't that "artist" pick a regular coin as his subject...

I remember a US Large Cent, altered in a similar way, appeared here earlier this year.

Those holed coins were probably once part of a bracelet or necklace.
