I can only guess at the date.
Just curious if Y'all think there is any value left to this coin.

I see 1798 second hair type, small 8, makes it somewhere in the S-173 to S-187 group, and it doesn't appear to be 182, 183, 184, or 187.

Yes there is value. That could easily go for as much as $20 on ebay. Nice reverse details.

I'm in the same camp at it being a 1798.

The value of this coin has as much to do with your collection as it does the coin itself. By that I mean - if you have a fairly regular collection in VF or better, this coin will stand out as a dog every time you see it and it won't be much fun keeping it.

If, on the other hand, you are putting a type collection or even a date collection together and you are perfectly happy with any example that doesn't have problems, then this would be perfectly acceptable.

Obviously it has some value, although what the dollar amount might be is relative to the collector buying it. For me, it's nearly a lake skipper. For my friend who I detect with, it would be a shining star.

It came into the LCS. They sometimes have me take coins,
to see if I can figure out more about them.

If I like them I will buy them.

I was thinking it might be a 1798. I check my Large cent
Dansco .. already have a 1798.

Most likely I will take back to the LCS ...

I see 1798, but if I look at it long enough, I also see 1799. Doubt it's a 1799 though, as that's a LOT more rarer than an 1798.

Can't be a 1799. If it was the spacing of LI would make it S-189 and the 1 in the date is too far left to be the S-189 obv.

I agree with 1798. In low grades these are fairly plentiful, so I'd suggest only purchasing it if it is a bargain.
