While looking through my mint sets that I inherited, I saw a note that said "valuable 1977 D dime). While looking I noticed that the dime is all messed up! I thought mint sets were supposed to be perfect? Does the dime make it more valuable?

Can't comment on the condition or worth of anything until a pic is provided. "Messed up" could be anything from damage to a mint error. Also, you cannot expect Mint Sets to be perfect. Before 2005, Mint Set coins were the same as coins for general circulation- they can have bag marks, scratches, dings, and even damage.

I agree we would need pics to know what "messed up" actually means because as was stated mint sets are just the same as the pocket change you get from the local convenient store, they aren't handled any special way or minted in any special way like proof sets are, the only difference is the coins will be in uncirculated condition where the pocket change you get from the store may show some wear. They are some mint errors that make it into mint and proof sets (less likely in a proof set because of the quality control they go through but it does happen) and a mint error could be worth a premium over a regular coin but one that shows damage would actually make the set worth less money to a collector in my opinion

Nah.

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts it's mint set crimping damage. These usually have a few parallel lines cut deep on the obverse through the rims and short choppy lines on the reverse affecting only the rim.

The dime is the lightest coin in the set and all the sets with Ikes seemed to have a lot of this damage on the dimes. It appears in all date mint sets though and can affect any coin with dimes and cents being the most common.

You can actually find these in circulation which gives an idea of the vast number of mint sets that have been cut up over the years.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
