The chances of restoring a Fine silver proof from the royal Australian Mint are incredibly remote due to the super high polished fields on these coins. What really annoys me is that PCGS consider that these results are good enough and have already shipped them back to me despite the email that I sent telling them that I am not happy with the results. Now I am back to square one with a bunch of garbage coins again instead of having the high grade coins I sent to be graded so I could add them to my set registry. I had hoped for a better outcome But alas that is not the case.

Trout1105 IMO you are justified in your disappointment. I was suggesting above that if PCGS were to know how much this could potentially harm them, they would probably do anything to satisfy you. Their image is analogous to the very coins that you sent. Has been marred, attempted to be restored and failed. Only difference is that they can still make it right....

I'm sure the most upsetting part of this entire ordeal is to have exceptional beautiful coins become less than they were.
I quit PCGS submissions about two years ago because of a rim Nick on a proof gold eagle that wasn't there when I sent it in. I cracked it out and just sold it for bullion.
Since then I've submitted a lot of coins to NGC without a single problem. It's nice to submit directly, good turn around, very reasonable shipping, much more accurate.

What PCGS should have done is to have replaced the damaged coins in the first place. It is not as if these coins are rare or impossible to source and I am certain that if one of the coin dealers that I use in Australia had inadvertently damaged these then that would have been exactly what would have happened. I have NO idea where I go from here with this or IF I should even bother to waste any more of my time and effort on it. This has been going on for months now and at the end of the day all I am left with is an expensive handful of scrap Silver I am no longer prepared to wait for the inordinately long turnaround times or put up with wrongly attributed/graded coins or other monumental stuff ups like this one from PCGS, I am DONE with these clowns. Since I had this "Problem" with PCGS I haven't sent a single coin to them to be graded, I have instead sent 4 submissions to NGC and to be quite honest it has been a breath of fresh air dealing with NGC. Fast turnaround times, accurately graded/attributed coins, reasonable grading fees and far cheaper shipping fees. Also more importantly NO stuff ups and great customer service.

Reading this has been like riding the dot com bubble (69! 66 , possible restored 69!, 67 ). Sorry you are going through this but sadly not the first time I have seen this with PCGS. Knowing your care and following you all these years (in a non-creepy way), it think it is time to tell PCGS to hit the road - your money can be better spent elsewhere.

I know this might sound trite, but you will be rewarded in some form in the future, and they will be penalized. I'm not renewing my PCGS membership, and will be going to NGC next time. If I were you, I would pursue this until you were happy. They have deep pockets, and can afford it. Maybe prepare a very nice letter, and reference this thread. They should replace the coins....period.....dot!

This seals the deal for me. Will never send a coin to PCGS.
Thank you for your detailed updates and images, they show all I need to know.

I have contacted my Bank and will endeavour to cancel the CC payment for that particular submission. I don't feel that is right that they have my money after ruining my coins and the service that they provided and I paid for was Garbage.

Here is my Two Cents (sorry, just had to say that ) I think PCGS should replace your coins, thought so from the get go. Even IF PCGS could have "restored" your coins they would not be natural, for a lack of a better word. Am I wrong?,does not the three TPG's have a guarantee to replace your coins if they get damaged or are under graded etc? I wonder if there is a way to find out how many times each TPG has replaced a customers coins? That would be nice to know. John1

I thank you all for the kind words and support, Much appreciated I have been cordial and polite in my correspondence with PCGS throughout this miserable episode. Maybe they took my politeness as a sign of weakness and that is why I have been treated with contempt and why they sent the obviously ruined coins back to me instead of replacing them as they should have done. I am only a small player with PCGS but I have spent about 25k with them over the last 3 years or so and that ends NOW. As far as I am concerned they have shown their bonafides ( or lack of them) and there is no way on Gods earth that I will ever do business with PCGS again. Even if I do manage to cancel the CC payment for this disastrous submission it won't cover what I have lost monetarily But it will give me immense satisfaction knowing that they won't profit from this either

Well my coins have arrived back and with a cursory glance they look OK But if I look closely at them they are pretty much "RS". I have sent yet another email to Mr Rosenburg outlining my disapproval and have asked for a refund/compensation. I won't pursue a chargeback on my credit card until I see what PCGS does about this. Lets see how PCGS handles this from here .

Judge, Jury, And Executioner. When there is no 3rd party involved in solving disputes (wait wasn't the original idea of TPG) what is to stop PGCS or any other slabber from altering or cleaning a coin then in house slabbing it with clean grade to cover their butt even if the market says otherwise once the coin comes up fror sale. I know someone her eon the forum got jacked by PCGS on a dateless 1916 SLQ which was clearly a 1917 but since the "inhouse" experts at PCGS sided with "their" original designation they refused to honor their published buyback guarantee.

When PCGS asked me to send the coins back to the US to see if they could "Fix" them they promised that they would cover the shipping costs. I sent them that postage receipt about a month ago and they haven't even honoured that yet.

This has been an enlightening thread. My views may differ slightly from many here, but this just underscores that one must be detached from any third-party graders. I'd consider NGC, ANACS, or even ICG as a possible replacement. Customer service goes a long way.

Here is why I prefer NGC better You don't need to buy a membership. If you are a ANA member you can submit to them. Faster turnaround times Pretty consistent grading standards Cheaper shipping Excellent conservation services Excellent customer service Do I need to say more? Everyone says PCGS is better but I agree their "gold standard" is slowing slipping towards NGC. NGC has their stuff together while PCGS is falling from grace.
