I have a 2016? (probably) that has mint error - how does one decide whether or not to send a coin off to have it authenticated/rated? This is not a man made error; the reverse is perfect.

There are several reasons - #1 you want the coin authenticated to confirm that it is not counterfeit, #2 it is a valuable coin and when you sell it you will get a higher amount. Usually to offset the cost of certification, the coin will have a value in the $200+ range.

@halfcorked, it looks to me like someone took this coin out of circulation and then beveled one edge on a grinding wheel. If so, it is worth exactly 5 cents and could be spent rather than submitting for authentication.

I also use $200 or better for value of coins I submit to NGC.

As others have mentioned, your coin was edge ground. It's worth 5 cents.

First Up

To the Forum and I hope your stay is long and fruitful

I hope you found this in your change and didn't buy it because unfortunately like others here have said this is Post Mint Damage or PMD and not an error coin.

If you're doing single coin submission, the coin has to be worth $200+ to justify the cost. Single coin submissions are brutal.

However, if you're submitting multiple coins at once, you can lower that aforementioned number because you get combined shipping.
