I was selling a $2 star note on ebay and someone asked me for the back plate number. I responded and asked if they would elaborate as to why this mattered and got no answer. Does anyone know what difference it makes?

Back-Plate-Number...signifigance???

quote:
On the web note, the back plate number is just to the side of TRUST in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST (red box). On the sheet fed note, the back plate number is to the lower right corner of the central white space (blue box).

Plates for printing notes are analogous to the dies used to make coins. Each plate has its own distinguishing features, though they are usually insignificant. These differences would be analogous to die varieties, as I understand it. I have no idea that anyone collects plate varieties, but would not be at all surprised if they do.

If the note Is in Great Conditon I will KEEP it if the front and back plate numbers match. I think that is why he was asking. In one of my Grading books it talked of ways to collect and it was one of the ways
