Hello all,
I was looking around and saw the "2016 Round 50c Fine Silver Selectively Gold Plated Coin". I am not sure if I should buy it at $110 (including postage). I thought that it might be a good investment being bullion but then again maybe not. This would be my most expensive buy yet by quite a bit so I am being a bit careful. Will it mature during time? Any help is appreciated.
Dan

$110 for 13.7g of silver is Not what I would call a smart investment.
I did however order this coin because I like it as I am a collector Not an investor.

"good investment" or "bad investment" is not determined strictly on silver value.

But since that is how you phrased your question, I will tell you that if you think silver will reach and exceed $249.71 per troy ounce** in the amount of time you consider reasonable for a good investment, then you did all right. If not, well then, you didn't.

** 110/(13.71/31.1)=249.71
$249.71 is the break even price if purchased at $110 for 13.71g

Whether it is a "good investment" silver value aside, with a mintage of 7,500, I rather doubt it.

I don't know the Australian coin market, but if it is anything like the American NCLT mint issues, they don't hold their issue price in general, let alone appreciate in value.

As all the other round 50c that have been issued this year Have increased in value on the secondary market UberDan does have a valid reason to ask about tis coin as an investment.

It IS an interesting coin and the round 50c especially the silver ones ARE popular But I can't honestly say that any of them and that is including this latest one will be the equivalent of the 2000 Victoria cross 25mm dollar in the future

I bought mine because I like the look of it and it complements the other round 50c I have in my 50c collection.
I am prepared to take a "Hit" on the future value because that to me is irrelevant because I didn't buy it as an investment I bought for pleasure and you can't put a price on that

It is a beautiful coin, but I would not purchase it as an investment. It's not worth it for the price. I would rather purchase 6 silver eagles.
Rest in Peace

Many collectors considered that the $66 for the In come the dollars/cents set was overpriced But the round 50c alone in that set is fetching about $80 on ebay and the other coins in the set are doing quite well also.
You will need a crystal ball to see which of the NCLT issues are winning investments

so in a word, DON'T melt it, but if you have a spare $110 to throw around than why not! Sadly, I don't really have a spare $110 to throw around so I guess the money will go to another worthy cause, furthering my Aus penny collection! lets have a look at that 1930 penny, shall we? ;)

I have to agree that coin would be for collecting { some call it speculating :) }, not for investing. If you're investing in small amounts of PM, I would recommend bullion coins from one of the big mints (for ease of authentication should you ever need to sell them). Modern NCLT is very speculative; the rare item that gains traction in the marketplace (i.e. Canadian Lady Bug) is very hard to prognosticate. On the other hand, if you're investing in older coins don't take my advice, because it's not my area.
