So I have had this coin for years, and I am torn on whether I should bother sending it in to one of the TPGs. I am fairly certain it would get a "rim damage" title and no grade despite its rarity. Even so, is it worth sending in a key date coin to get slabbed? What is your opinion?

I think it would be rated fine without the rim damage. The difference between VG and fine is about $200 and between F and VF is $300. How much would it cost to have it graded? I might get it graded just for the heck of it. Then you don't have to think about it anymore and wonder. The rim damage is the "unknown" factor. It is bad on the front of the coin and almost invisible on the back. Is getting a coin with potential value of around $500-600 worth the price of getting it graded? I think it would be if you were going to sell it. If you are not going to sell it then I would not spend the money. This is just my opinion. I have a set of LWH's and I have a 38-D this is AU but has bad details. It really hurts the price in a big way. My 38-d has a scratches on the front and they are noticeable even to untrained eye. Why not just take it to a coin shop and get an estimate? The "details" are going to screw with the value for sure even though they don't seem so bad to me. It is still a pretty valuable coin somewhere between Fine and Very Fine. I wouldn't mind having that coin but I sure would not pay full price for it. Not meaning to offend in any way.

I would grade this VG-08 at the very best, if even that. No point in having it slabbed, which would not clarify the value at all. Coin speaks for itself as it stands.

Good details. I sold one in the same grade and with a more-minor rim ding for $150.

Not all coins have to be certified by PCGS & NGC (IMO), why not submit it to ANACS..

How much do you think the rim damage detracts from the coin in dollars and cents? It may be VG but this is the way you usually find them from what I have seen. To get a coin like this in much better condition means the coin must have been plucked out of circulation within just a few years of its mintage. These coins wore very badly just like LSQ's and Mercury dimes.

I wouldn't bother sending it in . Keep it raw . Other than that rim bump the coin doesn't have any other problems. It's original with good honest wear . VG-8 sounds about right .

I would slab it .. only if I was planning on selling it.
And then I would only send it into ANACS.
If it was a little better grade with no rim ding .. NGC

Why spend the money?! This coin is just straightforward and in your face - nice G or VG example with big rim ding. How would spending any money on grading possibly change or enhance this?

If I was not going to sell this coin on ebay I would not spend the money. If I was going to sell the coin on ebay .. I would spend the $10 ANACS grading fee. In my experience a coin will sell good on ebay in ANACS holder. The LCS I work at have sold around 15 ANACS slabbed coins in the past couple months ... every ANACS coin put up for auction sold. There have been some raw coins put up .. that did not get bids. Others might have a different experience.

, Ok the both of you guys have some good points . However in order to get ANACS to slab it for $10 you have to submit 10 coins at $10 each . So if you don't have 9 other to submit , your out of luck . This said , you guys can finish your debates !
