The top of C and E of CENT look like a die chip connecting the letters. Comments welcome

Appears to be a barbecue chip, at that! Always fun to find little interesting chips and Cuds, even on lower grade "stuff".

Are there any websites to look at to help determine Newcomb Number?

Yes, I have this very same 1848 Large cent in a very even and eye appealing VF condition, and mine is EXACTLY like yours between the C and E. The others large cents I have minted in 1844 and 1849 ARE NOT adjoined continuously across and are distinctly separated between the two fonts. This is obviously a unique attribute of this date strike. Very cool indeed!

I'm going to look further into this as well.
