I was looking at some 1938 Lincoln cents for RPMs when this date caught my attention. I am not really thinking it is anything all that amazing, but that notch grabs your attention and then you start to think you see notches on the one and soon you are in fantasy land... Just had to share.
Probably a contact mark. Note the flattening on the mint mark and the bottom center part of the leg. When you view them together, they looks like a straight area affected on these devices.
The S very much looks like a contact point. But look closely at the catawumpus photo of the date. I put that in there to show that the 9 itself is relatively intact, and there seems to be an extra bit making up the notch. You can see the curved line that makes up the edge of the notch following up to where it intersects the edge of the 9. I was thinking extra material.
