Just got back from 8 days in Rome. For an ancients collector and classics reader, that city is simply sublime. I finally made it to the Capitoline Museum and after much scrambling about found the coin collection. It's a disappointment. Hard to find and poorly lit. And it's a shame because the coins they have there are amazing. Here's one I didn't know existed - probably because it's WAY out of my price range. Caracalla, Julia Domna, and Geta all together on the reverse of a coin. A quick search finds that it's RIC 181c. Sorry for the fuzzy photo. The poor lighting made it difficult for my iPhone to get it in total focus. Still I think it's an amazing coin.

Thank you for sharing! I guess they "keep the good stuff" locked away for study by appointment only (such as at the British Museum). In 2014 I managed to visit the "Cabinet des Medailles" in Paris. Like the BM (and any museum) it has limited space so could not display everything in its collection. One of the displays was the so called "treasure of Troyes" found at that Town in 1726 which comprised of aurei from the reigns of Nero to Septimius Severus.

The Naples half, so I guess that would be my lower half.

I visited Naples though we stayed overnight in Ercalano (Herculaneum) and hit Pompeii the next day. Naples is famous for pizza - and rightly so. I don't think I'll ever eat Pizza Hut ever again.

Quote: I visited Naples though we stayed overnight in Ercalano (Herculaneum) and hit Pompeii the next day. Sounds like it was a wonderful trip. I've been to Italy twice, but both times up north (Florence, Siena, Assisi, Lake Como, Milan, Padua, and Venice). Magical place, especially for someone who loves history and art.

Was in Rome way back in 1971. Will be going there again in 2017, to be at the wedding of my niece, who has a pHd in archeology; she has decided to marry Adriano. When she was toung teenager, my collection was instrumental in her taking a lifetime interest in archeology, which in turn was instrumental in her meeting the love of her life. I will make a point of visiting the Capitoline Museum
