I found this 1913 Barber half dollar in the 90% silver bin at my LCS. When I looked at it again at home, I noticed it looked very strange. It does not appear to be silver, but lead or something close to it. Deep scratches and mushy-looking letters lead me to believe that this piece is a contemporary counterfeit. What do you think?

To me it just appears to be a beat up Half. Weights would tell us quite a bit tho.
Rest in Peace

Weight would certainly help, but I think you are right. This looks more like a weak counterfeit and if it's in lead, you can push a pencil tip into it with no problem at all. You might want to try that on the edge so as not to mar this beauty further

I'll bet it's a cast copy. Note the lack of reeding and the "bite" marks. Over the years, I've seen numerous Barber type counterfeits like this one. It's likely underweight.

Die struck counterfeits are far less seen and command a premium from serious collectors. The cast copies tend to sell for only a buck or two as curiosities.

Give us an accurate weight ... just for the record.

I'm leaning towards non-genuine based on the photos provided.

The coin I have weighs 5 grams, very off from the correct weight. It must be a counterfeit. As for the pencil-tip test, I tried it and it worked. Thanks for the tip!

Is it that uncommon for a LCS to test their own inventory, or is a "junk" bin more or less at-your-own-risk?

I realize it's a counterfeit, but I really hate it when people recommend using destructive testing methods.

Look, feel and weight would have told it was fake.
