I picked up this 1857 Flying Eagle cent a while back. The more I look at it, the less I believe it is genuine. The date looks okay but the eye looks flat and the dentils are uneven (even worn/missing in places). Am I right that this is counterfeit?

Apologies for the blurry full-size shots, I hope the close-ups are better.

Details seem to be a bit 'mushy', but I think that in this case, due to wear.

How does the color appear alongside a known genuine Flying Eagle cent, with the same amopunt of wear?

How much does it weigh?

Looks genuine to me ... fine details with environmental damage. It may have seen action, during the Civil War.

I think it is real. Many FE look mushy due to striking problems
Rest in Peace

The loss of detail does not indicate what is normally seen on a Vf-Xf of this date. If it had been in circulation the top areas would show that wear. That is not the case with this coin.

Also I agree that the denticles look funky.

Does look a little odd ... but we don't don't what this coin has been thru.

As mentioned .. knowing the weight is important.

I would not jump on it being fake, until more checks were done.

Nothing is jumping out to make me suspect the coin isn't real.

Thanks all. The color looks fine (this is my only flying eagle but it looks comparable to my Indians). I can't speak to the weight yet -- just bought a scale, hasn't arrived yet.

I've learned enough from this forum to pay attention to things like dentils but didn't think I needed a scale until now. Go figure.

4.7g, all is well (just more banged up than I'd like, but that's okay).
