Hello all,

Ive got this very nice and rare merovingian coin fibulae in my collection. I was wondering if anyone can tell me the ruler and the lyrics. Which coin this possible would be?

Perhaps I am gonna sell it in the futher but only if I find the right buyer. In my personal museum it does fit nicely!

An interesting and complete artifact! There certainly seems to be some writing on both sides of the bust...
Can you tell us how you have determined the Merovingian origin of this item?

As what looks like N seems backwards, I have flipped the image - maybe it will help somehow?

Thanks alot!
The diameter is 22 mm ..

If you compare it with pieces from tremisis/solidus from Marseille or Chalon sur saone. the buste has some similarities.
If it would be carolingian you would have seen Louis le Pieux or perhaps Charlemagne. But those images looks different.

To style is different from roman period fibulae. Mostly an exact coin is in those fibulae...

True, but there were later Anglo-Saxon coins - and more importantly for us here - "nummular brooches" (sometimes referred to as "pseudo-coin brooches") that imitated Carolingian - and, specifically, Louis the Pious - coin types. These imitations often look crude and cartoony, with legends garbled.

I suspect that is what you have here. And an excellent example.
