Poll Question
Using the definitions/discussions found in another, very interesting, current thread (and past threads {grin}) about this topic in this main coin forum, pick which of the following descriptions MOST fits the way you are a coin person.

I think we all have a mixture of "types," but which one do you identify with most strongly?

I fit into "collector," but most of the other categories apply in some way. But mostly collector.

Poll Choices
 Hoarder
 Accumulator
 Collector
 Numismatist
 Investor
 Commercial activity (e.g., dealer, journalist)
evenly split between one or more (really?!)
 other (please explain)

Good point

From Moxking:

Hoarder - Makes no difference what they buy or how many of a kind they have. They have no inventory, no want list, and no real desire to do anything other than buy. Once they receive their stuff they put it in any handy corner without rhyme nor reason.

Accumulator - Someone who collects more particularly, but still does not have a want list or inventory and bases a large percentage of their buying on what they believe to be "good buys". Often times they will buy thinking they don't have something, although they later discover they do and are not all that concerned about such duplication. Is not interested in accomplishing any goals.

Collector - Has an inventory and/or want list and is most interested in accomplishing goals. Whether this be completing a set, a type set, one from each country, one silver from each year, one token from each town, or any other myriad of possibilities the collector is concerned with accomplishing some goal. They are more interested in finding what they want than in making a profit, although they are often times the ones who can spot scarce items for great prices as they have a strong knowledge developed through experience.

Numismatist - One who studies coins as it involves history, time lines, artists, engravers, mint history, type vs variety, and often takes that a step further to publish written information about their discoveries. Most spend at least as much time researching what they have as they do in trying to find more items.

Sap--"It is important to note that none of these things are "wrong". They're just different. And being different is OK."

Sap--"The Hoarder wants to accumulate. The Investor wants to make profits. The Collector wants to categorize, organize and complete sets. And the Numismatist wants to study and increase their knowledge."

Accumulator-numismatist. I sometimes like to buy something that catches my fancy, and then sit down and do the research to figure out how it fits into the broader scope of world history. I do sometimes pursue definitive goals (e.g. my Japanese type set, and my Roman set) but otherwise my accumulation grows organically.

Collector, numismatist, hoarder, in that order.

The hoarding comes from keeping all nickels and 95% copper cents.

I would like to fit into the collector category. I do get distracted by shiny object from time to time though

- Hoarder (Stacker):

90% silver coins at face value from circulation, back in the 1960s. More recently, slightly circulated gold coins at spot plus a percentage. I've posted many of these to various threads here at CCF.

- Collector:

US and world coins, with a few modern NCLTs, usually at prices substantially above spot.
Rest in Peace

Now that I think of it, I do have some goals, but they're mostly fairly nebulous, and rarely written down (though this is not as much the case now that I have a Numista account).
So I don't entirely fit in the "accumulator" category - but not really in the "collector" category either.

(I voted for "accumulator", incidentally, on residual memory from the other thread. But the more I think about it the more I feel I probably count as a "collector" too; perhaps it's actually closer.)

It depends on my mood. Mostly collector, sometimes accumulator, with moments of true 'numismatism'. But mostly I like to buy coins with a story behind them.

I think you can collect, accumulate or hoard coins (or most anything else) and STILL be quite mindful of investment potential.

I'd say I'm mostly a collector. But if you'd ask members of my family, they'd say I'm a hoarder.
I usually do not purchase coins for future profit, but if the value does go up...I won't be complaining.

I'm almost 100% pure collector.
On occasion I (try to) sell an item.

My wife has been told that I intend to die with my collection intact.
She knows who to go to if she wishes to sell it off.
That is, of course, AFTER I'm no longer around to contest that action.
