AE As of Colonia Lepida (Kelse) Obv. Helmeted bust of Pallas COL VIC IVL LEP Rv. Bull charging right PR IIVIR (above) P SALPA M FVLVI (below) 44-36 BC 12.51 grams 27-9mm Burgos 797 ?   Slightly unsure about the attribution number as this coin differs in the obverse legend. The ones I find listed show a 'plain' IVL while this coin has the V with a definite diamond shape within. The letters IVL also seem to be quite close together and perhaps form an M ? Lepidus controlled the provinces of Hispania and Southern Gaul (no fool he !) as his share in the first triumvirate. Lepidus formed an alliance with Marc Antony (Marcus Antoninus) and perhaps the monogram is either a reference to him or simply a clever way to include his full name Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. Or perhaps something from the Iberian alphabet ?  Not much to look at really (not yet anyway !) but at 31 euros I could not help myself !  Edited by FVRIVS RVFVS

I gave it a quick one day clean and will post a pic later.
The reverse has some tough spots that resist soaking and brushing.
I dislike actual scraping of this type of hard encrustation as it leaves nasty scars.
I prefer leaving the "warts" as is.
The coin has a lovely olive green patination that enhances its appearance
despite the relatively worn condition.
I have just recently become interested in the bronze coins of Iberia. I think I will be distracted for a few years !

Not the best photo but the coin now has an oil based (Blue Ribbon) solvent on it which creates excess glare. The red spots are hard and will probably remain unless they can be convinced to leave of their own accord.  |
