Hi.

I have recently been passed a coin collection and most of them are those found in circulation.

One though has got me stuck. I have tried researching the coin but getting more confused as I get on.

The coin is a 2p from 1999 and has a dull silver look about it.

I wonder if anyone can shed some light.

Maybe someone dipped it in silver, just to make it look different.

Thanks. Being a novice and not fully understanding the minting process this plate could only have been added post minting. Would that be a fair assumption?

One other possibility is that there was an odd planchet in the drum they are supplied in, and your coin was struck on that odd planchet.

It has been known to happen and if that's the case, it could be worth a few $$'s.

Interesting.

The coin is worn and there appears to be copper underneath so would that rule the wrong planchet out?

Can see this on close inspection of picture on obverse.

Thank you.

Would be great to get an idea what has been done to this coin etc.

A coin dealer I have spoken with has also seen the pictures and feels this may have been dipped in nickel by a jeweler.

If this is the case I will hold on to the coin as a curiosity more than anything.

It probably was silver or nickel plated. Lots of people use cheap coins as test subjects when they are learning how. If that's the case the two will weigh the same to the limit of accuracy most of us can hit (plating might add 2 micrograms to the weight).
