Got this back in change the other day and after looking at it in loupe a few times I need advice as to what could have caused this. For a PMD it's really odd looking, if it is PMD. Notice the indentation on edge of quarter above AM in America and rim edge on reverse is like a Cud I think. In advance I apologize for poor picture quality. Hopefully someday in future I will be able to afford the right equipment.

Since I'm new, I'm pretty sure that PMD means post mint damage, but PSD is new to me. Can some explain please what that and can you tell by pictures what might have caused this? I'm keeping it because it is so odd to me, even though it's probably not worth more than a quarter.

I always like to think that damage like this on one side is caused by the coin falling off something tall like a bldg. or someone throwing it very hard at a wall ... the possibilities are endless

PSD - Post Strike Damage. Damage occurred after strike. Note the reeds are visible in the in the dent. That indicates the coin was round to start with and altered or damaged after strike. Thanks, Doug.

Post Strike Damage. A coin can get damaged before it leaves the mint. Post Mint Damage. Damaged after leaving the mint. John 1

The reeds in the dented area show that it happened after the strike. The rims show it happened after the coin was struck. distortion of the letters show it happened after the coin was struck. Any one of these things prove it happened after the coin was struck.

PSD = Post Strike Damage, damage that occurs after the coin is struck PMD This is an older term that meant Post Minting Damage, the same thing as PSD. The problem is that many people shorting it to Post Mint Damage which lead to confusing among beginning collectors that though it meant damage that occurred after it left the mint. This would inevitably lead to questions or assertions about damaged coins with people claiming the damage might have happened before it left the mint and that therefor they were really "Mint Errors". For this reason we are trying to replace the old PMD term with the PSD designation. Because it is impossible to tell if a coin was damaged inside or out side the building, and get people to accept the fact that anything that happens to a coin after it is struck (for the final time) is just plain damage. (And that a coin DAMAGED before it left the building isn't worth anymore than one damaged after it left the building.)

I like that Conder101. It will save me/others who copy this a lot of typing answering that question in the future.
