...I just saw on the Mint's website that they will, in 2009, re-produce the Augustus Saint Gaudens original high relief Liberty $20.00 gold piece in 24 karat !......... So, what are everyone's thoughts on this latest one from the U.S.Mint ?....huummmmmm? Classic collectors "only".....i suspect might NOT like this idea....or will they ?......I'm curious ! Ultra Modern collectors will love this idea (if it doesn't cost $1,900.00!) I collect both.....but I don't have a classic Saint Gaudens, let alone the new one when it comes out.......I would hate for my "first" St. Gaudens to be a "brand new" reproduction on the Classic coin ! ........... .. .. There would just be something wrong with that ! LoL But, anyway, this will be news to some .......old news to others...and maybe thought provoking enough to comment for many members willing to "wade in"......... It is after all a very highly sought after Classic coin.......so.....a turn off for you......or something you're interested in ? ........ Edited by eaglefoot 03/14/2008 10:02 am

I was putting some Mercs in 2x2's last night, and I kept noticing how much prettier/cooler Mercs are the today's Rosies. Same with almost all the coins from that era. Walking Liberty half, Standing quarter, and the Peace dollar. I just kept wishing that I could have one that was brand new, just to see it. I like them all, very worn to MS, but I kept wishing that the mint would kinda do like Major League Baseball and their throwback jerseys. Lets have a couple of throwback years, and reissue some of those beautiful designs from the past. I bet there are a ton of people that have never even wondered what the dime looked like before they put FDR on it.

I own 2 "classic" St Gaudens but wouldn't mind seeing a new high relief version (because I can't afford the 1907) :). It's going to be different anyway, being a bullion coin. It will have the .999 gold and 1 oz weight somewhere. Also, if it comes out 24k, won't it be slightly smaller than the original ? The original was .900 only.

Not to slight the FDR coin, but the "Winged Liberty" dime was so much nicer, and it even wore gracefully! I suppose it's nice and all to honor previous presidents on coins, but that wasn't the original intent of Jefferson, Franklin, Adams and Washington. They were very opposed to showing leaders on coins, because it reminded them of Monarchism. Personally, I think it's possible to have more attractive coinage when you're not after a realistic portrait, especially on something as small as a dime.

I would love to be able to get my hands on a modern re-issue of a coin where I couldn't afford the original. Alas, I probably couldn't afford such a new gold coin either, so the point is probably moot!
BTW, KurtS, I agree with you. I'd rather have allegorical symbols like lady liberty and things from nature, including the cosmos (how cool wouldn't it be to have a Mercury or Saturn coin, or even a Milky Way or an Orion Nebula coin?-- this is the 21st century,a after all!) than presidents' images. Like I said in another thread, I think at this point a lot of those presidents represent ideas more than they do the actual person, but some are too new (Kennedy?) and allegorical and natural symbols would be better anyway, in my opinion.

I do not have any gold coins; I have little interest in them. This might interest me, like the gold Buffalo did; but chances are I will keep my focus on circulated coinage. quote: but that wasn't the original intent of Jefferson, Franklin, Adams and Washington. I hope it generates excitement in coin collecting, but for me personally it will likely be filed under the heading "overpriced junk."

I chose it for what is said more than for what it was! "We the People..." I am all about the Constitution! I have been working on changing to a custom avatar for a while now... still not ready for release.

Since I already have a 1907 High relief Wire Edge St Gaudens I will probably add the new minted High Relief to my collection as well just to have both High Relief's that have been minted with this design

I love the idea. It gives people a chance to participate in the excitement of a classic and beautiful masterpiece, while making the original coin even more sought-after and valuable. I think the mint should reprise a number of classics. Not to many at once. I think we have to many new coins on our hands already. But I like the idea of paying tribute to the classic designs in modern coinage. I think thats why alot of people like the buffalo dollar.

I like the idea. I was never a huge fan of the Buffalo, but the Saint Gaudens is stunning. Now if I could just work out the money part.....

Bryan - Lets see a pic of that 1907. I've only seen a couple and it always leaves me breathless.

Yup, it gives me chills! Imagine being there when he said it! I chose it because it was on my mind from the Superbowl pre-game... Hear it at 1:06: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km7pvRp0x9Q. Watch it all if you want a real tear-jerker!
