With all the recent ICCS bashing lately and I must admit, justifiably so, I wanted to add an NGC graded Canadian large cent. They have the variety correct, but please make note of the au50 grade and have a look at the coin.......Holy Cow!....if all my au50's looked like that, all I would have is a junk bin. Bottom line is, know how to grade!!

I think along with knowing how to grade it is very important to understand how each TPG grades. It is a completely different story when TPG's straight grade problem coins and counterfeits. As for the pictured coin I believe Stevie Wonder would have done a better job.

US grading standards are about ½ to 1 grade higher than Canadian standards.

Quote: US grading standards are about ½ to 1 grade higher than Canadian standards. Really? I pegged her at VF-30 before I saw the slab.

Yes but at least it's real. I have to agree that NGC hasn't always done the best job at grading accuracy. Clearly this is a VF30 coin even though 58's are notoriously softly struck. I do object to painting either one of the US TPG with a broad brush of grading exaggeration. I have (had) numerous examples of cross grades to ICCS at par or within a grade (even at mid grades where most of the problems occur). Here is a PCGS graded 58 in AU. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canada-1858...152262681381Here is an EF40 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1858-Large-...302028144804I can go though ICCS flips and present grading atrocities as well...

Is this a place you could use their guarantee? This is a coin where it is fairly clear that it is over graded and there will be many examples of properly graded 59's to compare it with.
Maybe time to test their guarantee?

"1921 5 cent is over-graded (even ICCS) but this just takes the cake: PCGSVF30 "

can only speak for colonial tokens...
but NGC makes Asyn look good...
easily 20+ points off the mark in most cases & corrosion issues often not noted.
