I just purchased a group of six unidentified small Medieval/Crusader silver coins.

I've been able to attribute three of them, but the others have me completely puzzled. I spent last night researching online and don't have a clue about them.

Here is the first.

The diameter is 17 mm. and the weight is .65 gram.

I'm not sure if my photos show the coin right-side-up or upside-down or some variation of the two.

Thanks for any help!

The large "S" indicates to me that it is from the Italian state of Siena.

Reminiscent of anonymous issues of Antioch...this is from the "Principality of Antioch 1098 - 1268" chapter of "Coins of the Crusaders":

Bob L.,

Thanks for the information. My coin is similar, but not the same, as you noted.

I'll do some more research now that I have an idea what I'm looking at.

@bob, I don't think that I've ever questioned your work before, but I gotta side with Sap on this one.

On the OP's second image, starting at about 1 o'clock, the letters are S E N A V E I V S. That, plus the S in between two colons, suggests Sienna Italy to me. In looking at Biaggi, the only denaro or grosso that I can find with a backwards S is a denaro from the latter half of the 8th century and is attributed as Biaggi 2534. However, if that backwards S is a unlisted variation, then this coin could date up to about 1266 AD.

By the way, until I read your replies, I was stuck on thinking that the coin was early French Feudal...

THANK YOU!

I just finished searching CNG's website for "reversed S" and "retrograde S" and didn't come up with anything.

I have another mystery coin I'll post later.

At least I was able to figure out four of the coins by myself. This is my first journey into the land of Crusader era silver.

I won an auction on ebay for six little silvers. They cost me $15.60, shipping included.

I've certainly enjoyed myself trying to figure out legends.

I love the search to ID coins. I have a lot of experience with Romans, but, as I said, have not purchased any silvers like this before.
