Since Ive been collecting I have several people (friends/family/co workers)That bring me coins to look over and tell them the value or to see if I want to buy them .A co worker said he has about 300 wheat's he got from his Grandma .A dealer offered a $1.50 a roll I said I would pay $2.00 .Hes bring them in next week for me to buy .
People also bring me 2-5 star notes a week .Just wondering if anyone else has this kind of luck ?Love it when coins find me its easier then having to find them .

My wife owns a craft store and one of her customers was telling a story of an inheritance that included over 1000 coins. She wasn't knowledgeable about coins and wanted some help assessing the value of the collection. Without asking me, she offered my help. When she got home and told me, I was as giddy as a schoolgirl (or in my case schoolboy). Well time went by and no coins to look at. The wife finally saw her a year later and asked if she needed help with the collection still. She replied ... "Oh, those old things. I just took them to a coin shop and they gave me $500 for the whole mess." From her description, almost half the collection was silver quarters and halfs, with some dollars too. Plus three gold pieces.

That was my one and only offer. But I still stand ready to assist!

People ask me to look at their coins all the time. But I am honest about what the have and the values they can expect from a dealer. They offer the coins to me sometimes and will do better then the dealer. But since some of these collections and accumulations have such sentimental value to people and they would only fetch around 1-200$ I tell them to hold onto them.

I have been asked on occasion to check out coins of co workers and others ,, I bring them home ,,put the ones which need to have some type of preservation in 2X2's add a KM# if applicable estimate a grade and value ,,and return the coins .

If they want to sell them I pay the value I have listed for the coins. If not then at least they have an Idea what they have.

I don't usually have people bring me coins (mainly because not very many know I collect coins) but I do have all kinds of family members bring me star notes all the time or call me and tell me that have like 7 notes in consecutive order and want to know if I want them

Sometimes people (usually family members) will bring me coins to look at. I once had a family member show me a gold eagle. I had to give him the unfortunate news that it was a fake.

Maybe different where your at but around where I live allowing to many people to know you have anything of value in your home is just not smart. Realistically, anyone in a large city invironment should know this. One of the largest reasons for home invasions where robberies are the motive around me is when the person living there has let it be to well known about something such as coins, stamps, guns, etc. Mostly most people just can't tell the a story as it really is. If you say you have $10 worth of coins because you just started collecting, they will tell someone $100 and that person will say $1,000 and on and on and on. One of my neighbors had several, not tons, of Gold Coins. During the robbery, where he was beaten, the robbers kept insisting they heard he had millions in Gold.
In the past, I too used to ask people I knew for old coins or anything in coins they didn't want, but I soon realized why that is not too smart.

Surprising I also constantly get family and friends selling them to me mainly Starnotes, silver coins found in circ, and even wheats.

As far as friends......the few that have any....never will part with em'.....and they educate themselves on what they're worth.
Family have shown me some coins in the past, of course, thinking they have a very expensive coin..... when, of course, they don't.
I'm still trying to work on buying part or all of a collection from a Cousin's girlfriend (she inherited it).
Some employees will ask what somethings worth from time to time.....but really not much comes my way like what you've mentioned.....SO I'D SAY YOU "ARE" LUCKY !

And yeah....what Carl said too.... it's a fine line being known as "The Coin Guy" to all of your family and friends.... and friends of friends, but that can lead to nefarious circumstances for someone that well known in your community and enviroment!!

To have reference materials and knowledge about coins ,,and to share that and help someone who brings coins to you does not mean that you are telling them about all of your coins that you keep in the bread box at home .

I don't worry much about someone breaking down my door here ,, its still the old west in many ways and everyone knows it .

The few times I have been asked, I would just recommend the Red Book. I have decided that if it happens again, I will just point them here!

Now, with computers and other electronics, oh boy, different story! I feel like 24/7 tech support sometimes!
