I would have sworn that I saw a list of key dates for all (or a majority of) American coins. Today I searched everything I could think of and couldn't find a nice compact list. I did find a list for one coin, and another list for another coin, etc., but I want one list of the majority of coins. Is there one?

Best thing is to make your own. I say this since so many have different opinions on what is a key date. Take Mercury dimes as an example. Note the 31D is NOT considered a key date coin in most price listings. In fact it is close to just a normal price range. Yet it is the 4th lowest mintage coin in the series. A 26S is considered a minor key date coin yet it is a larger mintage than the 31D and more expensive by about a factor of 5 to 10.
Similar with the 31S Lincoln Cent.
So a list of key dated coins would be a list based on someone's opinion. If you make one, let us know. Yours could be the one that makes CENTS.

I keep Numismedia (NGC site) on my favorites list. It has type, date, mint and mintage numbers and some price data for every U.S. coin. See if that works for you!

Since I couldn't find what I was looking for, I suspected I'd reluctantly have to make my own. Doubt that mine would ever be the one Carl refers to. So I think I'll do as Amac suggests and add that to the little teensy list I've already started. Thanks.

This site offers their list of the 'key dates.' It doesn't look too bad.

I started a thread about which dates to keep that you can find in circulation, it has fallen to page three, but I have an update for it so it will soon regain front page importance again. Check it out...

Thanks for the links you sent. My browser wouldn't open the coin-values site, so I'll try again in a while. And I didn't see any page three where Morgan's list was supposed to be. I did copy the lists that had been placed there and added them to my teensy list that I had started myself. Thanks.

True that the web site Bilbo linked to is pretty good but as I said, everyone has an opinion as to what a key date may be. For example, back to my examples, note on that web site they don't even mention the Mercury dime 31D yet again, 4th lowest mintage in the series and if your looking for one, good luck. Now go to the Lincoln Cents. Note they list the 31S. This is a coin that although has low mintage, is not considered a key by most due to the massive hoarding back in 31. And for Lincoln Cents if no mention of the FAMOUS 55Double Die, you might as well start a list of your own.
There are now so many coin web sites such as this one that it is starting to look like those commercials for buying a property with no money down.

Reading what just carl wrote reminds me how subjective our hobby is.

I am inclined to say that the key dates to any series will always be the last few you need to complete it. Some people may buy the expensive "keys" first, making the last few cheapies the "keys" to completion!

Even what defines the series, be it your own choice or the choice of the album manufacturer, is subjective!
