Have a Canadian one cent coin 1983 stamped on a foreign planchet. Weight is 2.52 g, 19.1 mm, planchet is non-magnetic. Coin exterior seems to be copper plated, with rim face and highlights exposing a white metal planchet base. My research leads me to believe this was struck on a Bangladesh 25 Poisha planchet which is S.S. type 304. Would appreciate any instructions on how to determine planchet metal composition and any valuation suggestions etc.

Are you sure it is not a regular penny? 1983 pennies weighed 2.5, which is very close to the weight of yours. It is also 98% copper and non-magnetic. I'm no expert on errors though so I'd leave it until someone with more experience answers.

The weight seems to be closer to a penny than to a 1983 25 Poisha which weighs in at 2.64 Gr / 19mm and has a reeded edge...A Penny is 2.5 gr /19.1mm plain edge...

Thank you for your prompt reply on the 83 one cent post. The coin has been inspected by two coin dealers and verify that the base metal of this coin is a white, non magnetic metal and certainly not copper. The worn high spots are clearly the wrong planchet metal. Thank you again.

Your thread title is misleading, there were no one cent coins made in 2013.

waterboy, you'll have to XRF it to figure out what metal it's made of. But I don't think 25 poisha were 12 sided like this one. Maybe some weathering made part of the metal look white? Not sure to be honest, I'll try researching some stuff too

Waterboy...I'm not trying to discredit your post, I only presented some facts...As far as I know (And didn't check this) the mint did not do any copper plating at that time for any coins. I'm not sure how it would be possible for your penny to be plated as part of the mint process in 1983 even if it was struck on a foreign planchet. There are people here far more knowledgeable than me on the topic that I'm sure will chime in.

Thanks to CoinCanuck for pointing out the wrong date...
For Paulz, I appreciate the heads up on the 12 sided rim comment... will have to research that issue. As for a XRF, where would that service be available from?

Hello CoinCanuck... no problem with your reply, I appreciate your comments as I'm trying to research this coin and I could use all the help I can get... I too question why the copper finish on a coin that is supposed to be 98% copper planchet. Copper plating wasn't used in 1983. I received no assistance whatsoever from the mint when I contacted them, so here I am, trying to research this coin.

Hello John100... thank you for chiming in with the GTA bullion/Coin Dealer service suggestion. You also mentioned that there might be a CCM that could have access to the XRF service, could you shoot me a contact name s.v.p. Thanks again...

Nope. The Royal Canadian Mint was not striking copper plated coins for foreign countries until 1992.

In fact, I own a 1983 1-cent struck on a Bangladesh 25 Poisha planchet:

It is in a PCGS Secure Holder. Try again in a little while - something is up with the PCGS website...

Thank you for your prompt reply and interesting comments SPP. If I may, I have a couple of questions. Is the rim on your 83 round or 12 sided? Also, what is the surface finish on your specimen?
There are many anomalies present in my 83 which I do not understand and the questions defy explanation.
First, how and why would this specimen appear to be copper plated?
Second, at what point in the coins stamping process would the 12 sided rim be produced?
Third, could you offer any explanation as to how this specimen could have evolved?
I am asking these questions due to the fact that having contacted two Canadian Coin Grading Services, I was politely told that they would not want to handle this coin due to the excessive research time that would be required.
Lastly SSP, what steps would you suggest that I undertake to have an XRF test completed on this coin, and would I ask for a test on both the plated metal as well as the planchet metal?
Your indulgence and assistance is greatly appreciated... thank you.
