Does anyone happen to recognize this piece?
It looks like swiss cantons? Or some kind of crusader coin?

perhaps 16th/15th century...

@vince, I'm still looking, but not having any luck yet. I'm leaning away from Brittany though. At least in the deniers that I've seen, the cross has those rounded features but is still somewhat different.

Finally found it! This was a tough one.

You have a one Fuenfer from the Swiss Bishopric of Wallis/Valais. It is undated, but was minted under the authority of Matthaeus Schiner (1499-1522 AD). The attribution is HMZ 2-1026 and Palezieux 33-40. I've taken the liberty of cropping, rotating, and blowing up your images below. I don't have an exact inscription, but the obv should be something like MATHEVS EPS SEDV and the rev inscription should be something like SANCTVS THEODES.

Extremely good detective work there, Dave. Impressive. I have had no time for serious searches these past few weeks, but the little time I spent on this one was enough to convince me that it was a toughie. Well done.

thanks! I don't have your knack for pattern recognition so I had to brute force my way through all of Roberts and then about 3/4 of HMZ. When I saw a similar cross with those petals or annulets under a coin from Solothurn, I knew I must be getting close.

best clue

Well, since you ask... First, I spent some time trying to read enough of the inscription to websearch--I got the EPS correct, but not enough of the other letters to get close. Then I spent quite a bit of time chasing that cross in Roberts (because of my mistaken thought that this was Feudal French). Afterwards, I spent some time looking at the heraldry of German States and Swiss Cantons to no avail. Finally, I went page by page through HMZ looking for for either that dumb bunny shield or cross. I started getting excited when I found a similar cross in the coins of Solothurn and then boom, I found your coin.

In retrospect, I could have saved some time if I had started with the HMZ (especially since you provided that clue).
