I was a 90s child and UNICEF boxes definitely existed into the late 90s.
They no longer exist? :/

Aw, I was really hoping the wheat one would be one of the winners. Out of all those that have won, none of my favorites were chosen, although the loonie and nickel still look nice. The other three... not so much.

meh! They will never become iconic like the '67 designs.

Given the choices they had, they did OK with the nickel (of the winners it was the only design I voted for) and the quarter is the best of five bad choices I guess. The dime is so small it'll probably look like some indistinct scribble in hand and the toonie is just meh, whatever. I think they missed by a mile with the loonie, the wheat was by far the best looking design of any amongst all the coins, instead we get a jumble of Canadian icons where everything gets lost.
@ Redzapsid's wife, he's not making it up lol, I remember getting the Unicef boxes back in the mid 60s, don't remember the design on them though.

We had Unicef boxes in the US back in the late 50's & early 60's.

I think we know what the general consensus is when UNICEF boxes get more commentary than the coins!
More than half of the winners were the ones I voted for. That does not mean I was happy with the choices I had to pick from. The design for the Loonie is way too busy for me. The designs need to be simple like the recent Canadian flag and the large poppy on the circulating quarter.
There is no continuity between the coins. Someone looking at the coins lined up side by side would likely not be able to guess the categories they came from just by looking at the coins. They should have just had one theme like "Our Wonders" so they coins would have been united in some way like the 1967s were all animals.

I like the loonie's design, but I must admit that for a 150th anniversary, should've been simpler and better. For it to be remembered as the 150th anniversary coin (the same way we can so easily distinguish 1967 centennial coins), it has to be nice and simple. In a few years I'll probably find one in my change and just think it's another regular commemorative coin. I think even the Canadian flag/large poppy quarters were a bit too busy.

I'll add my " Two Cents worth"! Although there are some interesting pieces here, there is no real sense of harmony throughout the entire set. For Canada's 150 birthday, I had hoped that the RCM would have taken a much more serious approach to the design of these coins / overall set. They should have hired a professional designer / artist as they did back in 1967 with Alex Colville, which resulted in a stunning Centennial set that is both timeless and beautiful. A set that we still treasure today. Every numismatist, either starting out or well seasoned surely has the 1967 Colville set in their collection. The 150 coins will have nowhere near the same impact. I feel like a massive opportunity has been lost.

Quote: Front Page story in our Halifax Chronicle Herald today on the designer of the 5 cent Beaver coin, - Gerald Gloade from Millbrook I like the coin more after reading his explanation of how he came up with the design ... thanks for the link. Thanks for the winners post Wildflower! Unit I saw the sketch of the 10 cent coin again, I wouldn't have remembered that it was supposed to be a Dove. My favourite is the $1 followed by the $2 and 5 cent. The rest are nice given the options available to choose from. The bouquet of flowers would have been a nice diversion. Quote: Note the new Mint Logo below Queen. Look closer - that's supposed to be the 150 logo not the RCM logo which is only on the 50 cent coin. Given time based on the response to a question on the website regarding the proof set, there will probably be a number of options to get the uncirculated versions other than in pocket change. Should be a fun and exciting year for sure!!
