Hi everyone. I'm new to collecting, and would be grateful for your assistance in helping me expand my (at this point), very limited knowledge; especially in yhe field of identifying legitimate error coins from those that have been tampered with.

I've had a bag of 1 & 2c pieces forever (i was lucky enough to be probably the last generation of kids that could buy a few lollies with them). At first I kept them after finding them all throughout my grandparents house, while helped them move, and my grandpa laughing at me and saying "they probably aren't even with the face value". I remember telling him "they will be one day; and then I'll be rich because I jave a bag of them". Taken as child like hopes and dreams, I was told I could keep any and all coins I found there; and and my great grandpas old dairy we had to take down.

Cue 20 odd years; and playing "shops" with my daughters, my eldest charlie asked if we could use the "daddy dollars". Having completely forgotten about them, I had no idea what she was talking about; until she took me into the laundry cupboard, crawled into the most dusty of the corners, returning with the brown paper bag they had been in since the day of collection.

Naturally I didn't want to disappoint either of them, and was glad to have them find a use after lugging them around for so long. We poured them out and amongst the 1 & 2s were a few other coins I remember finding. There were a few threepence (all before '45), sixpence, shillings, florins, half pennies and pennies. Curiosity bit and I wanted to find out what (aside fairy ice cream and puppy cakes) they were worth.

After being a bit surprised (and a bit disappointed after seeing the worth of some) I stumbled across an article about error coins. I had put ine of the florins aside thinking it worth nothing due to its condition. This is one of the coins I'd like your opinions and knowledge on. I have the voice of reason speaking the most loud, telling myself "its an old coin, its just worn" but there is still that whisper of "are you sure?".

Interested in how many different types of errors possible, and even with the sheer amount of circulation coins minted, they're so rare;i started hunting thinking it couldn't be so. I'm worried in part that I'm looking to hard for something; that I am/will be finding something that isn't even there.

Which leads me to the second picture upload.
Being old coins made of maluable metals, I have heaps that bear scars. This one seems different however. I downloaded a magnifier app on my phone, because I couldnt find my magnifying glass and from what I can see (or think I can) it seems like a planchet impurity resulting in a fissure. My reason for thinking it had to be a legitimate error, is because it looks as though the legend is unaffected. As if the die striking has fused the metal over the crack.

I'm looking forward to your opinions; and whether legitimate or not, have had great fun with my kids, and look forward to learning some new things.

Thanks very much.

(P.S. I'm hoping the 2c plachet error is legit; because we've dubbed it the snot rocket queen)

Welcome!
The florin does appear to just be a worn old coin but you are correct about the 2c - it does have a planchet flaw called a lamination flaw. They're not overly common but are one of the more common errors you'll find.
http://www.australian-coins.com/ is a great site that has a lot of informative articles about error coins in general and is well worth a read.

Snot rocket queen lives lol.

I found out a little about the florin also. Turns out it is quite valuable; but only in sentiment. I was having a laugh with my mum about "my brown paper bag of hopes and dreams". She couldn't help but share the laugh with grandpa; who was able to tell us it's story.

When my great grandpas health was fading, he was urged to quit smoking. As he attempted; to keep his hands busy, apparently he would take a coin out to muck around with. After grandpa joked with him, that he would rub a coin out of existence; he thought he'd try. That being the result.

Quite sure we have another for the collection already. 1974 sans sd 2c.

Thanks very much for replying and pointing me to some information; looks like I'll have plenty of bedtime reading material. So far it seems like the best thing to remember when searching for errors; is don't let your excitement carry you away.

Thanks again.
