I have a 1972 S Kennedy with what looks like tripling.

I'm having trouble matching it to the three that I looked up.
Seems like SDO-001, DDO-001, DDO-002 are the choices?

That is machine damage after the strike on the coin. Note it reduces the size of those devices you shown images of. The date also show MD on it. The die is created during one process. The mint mark is a separate process (pre 1990 coin) So when it shows the same direction on the devices and the mint mark, it is machine damaged after the strike. Not hub doubling. Not a doubled die. sorry.

Ahh, I have been trying to get a handle on how to spot MD.

That trick with the mint mark will come in handy. Another thing I'm wondering about is whether MD always smooshes towards the rim or not?

It varies. Sometimes it happen on one or more directions. Depending the the looseness of the machine.
