1970 was the bicentenary of Lt Cook's discovery of the east coast of Australia, which he annexed on behalf of the British.
Your coin was the first commemorative issued in the decimal era (1966~).
Lt COOK, who later became Captain COOK, is widely remembered in Australia (and New Zealand; and elsewhere): Cooktown; James Cook University; etc.
