For a while, I have considered starting an MS-63 Peace dollar set. The main thing keeping me from starting a graded set is the key dates that seem to be out of reach to me at that grade. I never considered an AU set until recently, but would like to get everyone's input before I begin. Are AU-58 coins desirable in this series or should I just purchase the dates I can currently afford in MS-63? Also, is NGC or PCGS more reputable with PD grading? I am new to numismatics so any help would be appreciated! Edited by logantrky 11/08/2016 7:17 pm

General Rule #1: Buy the best you can afford.
General Rule #2: Buy the keys first; the will increase in value the fastest thus costing you more later.

It takes some patience but one can often find MS-62s with eye appeal that closely matches a MS-63+ set. The 34-S is definitely a challenge for those of us on a budget. It seems to me that PCGS is tougher on the keys than NGC, but that's completely anecdotal. For me, eye appeal carries a lot of weight especially with Peace dollars.

If you want to stick with all AU's, the 34-s which is not normally a key date will end up costing more than a key date

In fact, getting the au58 1934s Peace dollar will set you back around $1100, much more than the key dates 1921 ($200) and 1928 ($450) combined. 1934-s is just too hard a date in high conditions. Instead, aiming for a low au on the 34s will cut the price in half

I would try to get the key dates and all dates with less than one million mintage in MS condition. That is where most of the value is in this set. The rest you can get in AU condition. An AU58 set is not a bad idea, but best chance of appreciation is to get key dates in MS if you can afford it. The 1934P and 1927P are coins I would try and get in MS. I would try to the 21, 28, and 27-S in the best condition I could afford even if it takes you a while. Depending on how long you plan to keep these coins should guide the amount of money you want to spend. I think high grade Peace dollars are undervalued especially the ones with mintage of less than one million. Even if you are a collector years from now you may want to sell and you will get much better appreciation if you buy the best and the best for most Peace dollars is affordable. There is no Peace dollar that will cost you $100,000 in MS63.

I'd go with EF-45, if you're on a tight budget. I'd imagine Au-58 Peace dollars would be very expensive. especially the 1934 S dollar.

Good luck finding a nice 1934-s in AU58 for under $1200. I've been looking for a few years with no luck. Dealers mark up the nice ones for way more than book price.

I'm with AES -- I wanted to make an 63 set but I'm okay with 62s for budget, time, and eye appeal reasons. I'm not even close to the 34-S (almost halfway through the set) but I'll worry about that later.

Sorry , I really can't give you good advice on Peace dollars. I don't own a single one as I find them ugly and boring . I hate the reverse strikes on most of them .for me they are very weak .Talking about MS-60 to 63 . Circulated PD's are not very eye appealing at all . If it were me I would try to put together a certified Lo Ball set , at least that would have some character . Comments are my soul honest opinions !

Lots of good advice here! I'm not sure why they all need to be the same grade as that could be a little boring. Going down to AU-55 on the keys and semi keys will work fine with all common in BU some being MS 62, 63 and 64. Trying to find a 62 that appears to be a 63 to almost all of us is fun.

Peace dollars are a small set of coins so you can probably afford to get them all in AU58 except the 34-S without spending a fortune. Get certified coins if you buy online. There are 11 Peace dollars with mintage of less than 2 million and 4 with less than one million mintage. I put a set together and I wish I had gone for either AU or MS on all of them except perhaps including the 34-S which can be had in AU50 for a reasonable price....$500 maybe. It is a great set to start with for collectors. If you want complete mint/date sets many others will cost you more especially Morgans, LSQ's, LWH's and even Buffalo and Mercury dimes.

Great suggestions. Thinking I may do me 63 minimum on common dates and shoot for au 58 on keys?

I am just starting out collecting coins and I am starting with Peace dollars. This thread has been helpful although I have a question. Is it important to have all your coins be the same grade? (another poster mentioned this as well). I am just interested in "good looking" coins at a fair price (good looking is a bit subjective to me). In my mind, basically I am looking for XF and higher, but I don't have any specific goals like AU58, etc. Also, I just wanted to say I am glad I found this thread as I think I know which coin I want to get next now. I was given a 1921 and 1928 for Christmas to get me started. Looks like 1934-S is next on my list. Although that one I will most likely go no higher than XF since I am on a budget. Is there a good website to look at to get a good idea of fair prices for these coins? I have books, but I imagine the book prices are out of date soon after they hit the press. I looked on ebay, but the prices seem inconsistent and I wonder if some of the coins are not mislabeled, frauds, counterfeits, etc. I rather buy coins in person.

I'm glad I found this thread. It answers my question. Morgans are my favorite so my collection of those is MS (although there are some coins that I would rather have in lower grades because they look good), but I was thinking an AU/BU collection of Peace dollars in a dansco album would be good. My Morgans are in air-tites in a Caps album. I also thought of getting some coins in in XF because Eye appeal is going to make a bigger difference than worth. And a set of XF to BU Peace dollars in a dansco album might look real good.
