Are the Rabbit Ears the SAME shape every year? Or does the Cud vary? ie, is the same die (which I doubt) or a weak spot in the die due to the design or something (more likely)

The Rabbit Ears can be long & narrow, just like a rabbits ear, or just an odd shaped blob. Some short, some long, some like a miniature ball, but always behind the smallest roos ears.

To be quite honest I don't know what causes them. Some problem with the die I guess.

Got my first noticed 2008 coins today (I say noticed because until I joined the forum here I really do not think that I paid much attention.

The first was the $2, am really happy with this, it is about as close to unc as you can get I think, maybe 1 or 2 very small marks, which could be attributed to the coin being moved from the mint, bagged. The obverse has a near perfect field, and high shine, while the reverse has 3 or 4 small marks but similar shine to the front.

Also a 20 cent in similar condition, only a few more nicks, and also got some 07 5cent and 10cent. Hopefully will come across the other coins in similar condition in the near future.

I still haven't seen any 5c, 10c, and 50c 2007 coins yet. I am seeing lots of nice looking 2006 coins floating through, so I'm wondering if Melbourne still hasn't gotten through all of those yet.

Anyone else from Melbourne experiencing the same thing?

Nobody has reported finding any 2008 5¢, 10¢ or 50¢ yet. I've stopped counting $1 & 20¢.

$2 are still not appearing in large numbers, I've got about 15 so far.

On another forum there was a report of 1 x 2008 50¢ sighted by a cashier in a Sydney GoLo in early March, but I think it was just an hallucination.

All 2007 coins are pretty plentiful in Brisbane, 5¢ are the least common, but I've probably got about 25. Heaps of 10¢ & 50¢ if you want any, just PM me.

G'day NEAesculus,
now I understand: it's a Melbourne jinx.
I'm "from Melbourne", but Darwin has been home for 30 years.
2007 coins: I've onlt seen plenty of $1 & 20-cents;
just a few 10-cent & $2;
but no 5-cent, nor 50-cent;
and zilch from 2008.
The funny thing is: the more coins I look at, the luckier I get ...

Still haven't seen a single 2008 coin of any type in Mackay yet either. Have all the 2007 coins, but only the 20¢ is plentiful. Maybe I should try the south side of town. I don't think they are reaching the north side.

I'm from Melboure too and haven't seen a single 2008. The only 2007s I've found are 20c and only 1 5c. Like NEAesculus says, plenty of nice 2006.

I think that the distribution of coins seems to depend entirely on the demand for Coin by the security companies. Which is in direct relation to the demand from the banks, and is the same as bank note's. If they have enough for the needs available then there probably no need for them to source new coins. Maybe a similar situation as with the 1983 & 84 20cent piece, could play as an example. While they may be producing the 08 coins, it is not to say that there is a sufficient demand as yet to release all denoms to all locations from the mint.

As Brisbane as an example, $2, $1 and 20cent seem to be appearing, however 5, 10 and 50 cents not yet. This I think shows to some degree that not all coins are in demand for circulation as yet. Hopefully we will see these other coins in the near future however it could be anyone's guess how many or where they will first appear.

20 cent coins and $2 dollar coins have showed up on the border ( NSW & VIC). Ladies at the bank rang to let me know that they got in $100 of 2008 20cent coins, but as they liked them in $10 lots they opened all of the bags and made them into $10 bags
