Cleaned. You can visibly see hairline scratches on both sides and I'm not wearing my glasses. It's pretty obvious.

People tend to use "Harshly" as a descriptor for this type of cleaning.

Unfortunately, it was abrasively/harshly cleaned. You can easily see hairline scratches

Cleaned but what is the big deal with a 1921 Morgan silver dollar. It is good to know what a cleaned coin looks like. Also, some coins are polished which is another form of cleaning and it obvious when you look close at a coin. They look good in a photo but when you see them you can tell something is really wrong. A really high quality mint coins has that frosty look often and not a polished look.

As has been the census, it's cleaned, but it doesn't really affect the value too much. A very common Morgan and even if it was not cleaned it probably wouldn't sell for much more than $20-$22 in that grade.

Thanks for the replies. I thought so much. @terry it is no big deal other than the fact that I've owned it for 30 years. I'm going through my old collection and trying to learn.

I see what you are trying to do and you are smart. It is best to learn first before you invest a lot in coins. What I have learned has been the hard way by buying coins and finding out later they have been cleaned or that there is rim damage. Plus, if you buy coins online photography can cover up many problems. This is why online I buy only certified coins. At LCS I buy raw. There was a poster here who had a set of Carson City Morgans passed down to him. He was asking about them and it just knocked me out because they were beautiful and valuable, so keep asking and excuse me if was assuming you were a experienced collector.

@terry no worries and thanks for the helpful reply. But could you clarify what 'LCS' stands for? A google search for lcs coins came back as Liberty Coin. Is that the company you are referring to?
