Got this last week, owner did not have any info on it so I am asking the vast pool of knowledge available on coin community for help. here are pics. It is larger than a US half, don't have a dollar to compare it with, reeded edges, weight is 19.8 grams. (silver?) I have also provided a close up of the center writing on one side, not sure which is obverse and which is reverse! Any help will be greatly appreciated, bob (I probably overpaid for it since that is what I usually do!)

It's fake.

Supposed to be a Chinese silver dollar, which would weigh 26.7g. It is very likely magnetic as well.

Sorry to say it, but this is a coin you NEVER buy anywhere but a reputable auction house. I don't think any member has turned up a genuine coin that they got for a "bargain".

Get your money back if you can!

Thanxz Finn, I thought it was a little on the light side as far as weight goes, that is why I had question mark after "silver?"
I can't get my money back but I am not into it for very much, I have spent more on a lottery ticket and have never won anything substantial there either! What I won't do is pass it on to some other unsuspecting fortune hunter! Might drill a hole in it and use it for a fishing weight or make it into a key chain fob!

This particular "dollar" is actually a fantasy, derived from a proposed design for a 1 tael coin struck on speculation for the Chinese government by a mint in Europe. The design was never issued because the Chinese Imperial government adopted the dollar standard for their coins, rather than the tael. There are some genuine 1 tael patterns with this design (they are very scarce and expensive) but the 1 dollar design was never issued.

A genuine Chinese 1 dollar coin bears the denomination, or rather the weight, in Chinese as "7 mace 2 candareens". This particular fantasy has forgotten to include one of the characters, and simply says "7 mace 2", without the character for "candareen". We have seen them numerous times on the forum before, such as this thread.

A genuine Chinese dollar would also weigh about 26 grams. A genuine tael would be even heavier, something like 32 grams.
