Since 2013 I have collected only some classic coins and the majority of my scattered collection is silver coins from the USA and other old world silver coins.

I do like the look of silver over gold hands down but as the spot price today dropped to $ 1,212.00 an ounce I can hear Yup7676 in my head saying buy gold coins as well as silver. And how true it is.

I am thinking of selling off some silver and investing that in some gold bullion coins. I cannot get an ounce or half ounce just yet but would like to get one 1/4 ounce and 1 or maybe two 1/10th of an ounce gold coins. But what should I get. I really do not care about design or country of origin, but I do want the most purity I can get in a gold coin. All suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks
ST

Canada has issued a lot of golden coins with a fineness of even .9999. I don't think it gets better than that. They start at 0.5 gram, I think (the miniature coins) and go up to at least one ounce pure gold in the modern bullion series.

Among the American coins, most modern gold commemoratives have about 1/4 oz but are 90% pure. On the plus side, there are quite a few that don't carry much numismatic value so they can be found just above spot if you shop around.

American gold eagles are a little more pure (<~92%) and available in several sizes. They should be more plentiful but I can't speak to their prices.

There are gold buffalos in fractional sizes as well, but only for a few years and they seem to carry a premium. These are the most pure among these varieties, at 99.99%

In any case, beware of counterfeits. Slabbed coins are less likely to be fake (because they'd have to copy the slab as well) but there's additional cost involved for that security.

--- Edited to add: The 100th anniversary issues of the Mercury dime and Standing Liberty quarter may be of interest to you as well. Those are 1/10 and 1/4 ounce and 99.99% pure, and with a high mintage. They are plentiful but they were released earlier this year and prices may still be settling in the secondary market (the quarter is still available at the mint's website).

You can often get the American Eagle gold in TPG for about the same price as raw for one more layer of security. Buy from a known seller, such as advertisers here, as there are counterfeit gold coins, even for recent years.

If I can do it .. anyone can ...

I want to pick up some modern commemorative gold.
Pick up more $2.50 Indians .. when I find them,
I did get a 1926 last week.

Canadian gold will be on my list .. but I don't see
much of it.

It sounds like you are looking for gold as bullion ..
there are many older world gold coins that can be
bought in the spot/melt range.

The two circulation gold coins selling closest to spot are British sovereigns (91.6 % gold, just under 1/4 oz gold content) and French 20 francs (90% gold, just under 1/5 oz gold content). US pre 1933 circulation coins sell at a considerable premium above these.

Mexico 2 and 2.5 peso gold are generally a good value in the 1/10 oz range.
