Hey there guys! So I purchased an 1857 Large Braided Hair Cent, and I have a couple questions... #1 - What's with the squared edge? I was thinking proof, then I wasn't. I'm lost on this. (The one on the left is an 1856 for comparison) #2 - Would this lady benefit from the PCGS Restoration Service? I haven't ever used it, but the whole surface, and in between the devices and denticles are all kind of gunky. #3 - Grade? Any input would be awesome! Thank you!

Not only should the rim not be square, but it shouldn't be so shiny and unmarked when the rest of the coin has a rough, porous appearance. No, I don't think restoration will help this one.

Is this genuine? It kind of looks like a forgery to me

Almost certainly a fake See: https://www.NGCcoin.com/news/articl...Large-Cents/Look at the identical marks on the rim at UNI, and on the E in CENT. The pinhole/depression in the wreath is also present on both the fake and OP's coin. The only difference is the date (OP's is a large date variety but the numerals have the same shapes as the fake) but the reverse being the same as the fake, and the fact that the article indicates that the dates were hand-cut by the forger, makes me pretty certain OP's is a fake as well, the forger probably faked both the large and small date varieties.

Thanks, Adam. Shouldn't have been so circumspect but at four on a Sunday morning I just couldn't do it.

Yeah, sorry about that. From whom did you acquire your "coin" ? On ebay? Might as well expose the seller. Return yours if you can and let others know who the bad apple seller is.
