In the spirit of this post, I'll throw out another one that I've been watching. Beautiful coin and graded au-58. http://www.ebay.com/itm/142156777996

But is it cleaned or uncleaned?

Most likely cleaned. This coin is over 170 years old. It shouldn't look white.

I keep this coin both as a teaching tool and as a reminder of why you should educate yourself when new or returning to the hobby before you spend a couple hundred bucks on a disaster.

That 1844 is definitely dipped, but not cleaned. The article jpbone linked offers an excellent explanation.

To collectors who prefer the eye-appeal of a new-looking over original coins (just being matter-of-fact here, not trying to chide you), the 1844 is certainly attractive. To collectors who prefer surface originality, the 1844 would be considered damaged and worth a substantial discount. Keep in mind the surface quality is still the same if it was dipped correctly. Value is dependent on on a specific collector's preference.

Also keep in mind that CCC often overproces their coins, so do your research on what a specific coin is consitently going for in major auction houses and try to pay that or less.

IMO, originality is key for advanced collectors who have money to spend regardless of the grade on the holder.

"Wholly original" is going to get the money at any grade every time. The skin on that 1850 is

Paralyse, that 1843 is

Many Morgans are white and uncleaned due to the environment they were kept in. I like my Morgans white and my Trade dollars dark with age. Sometimes it fits the coin better. Compare these two

Thank you for the link!

Does anyone know what the grey sheet price is for an 1850 au-58 dollar?

I don't know what the current grey sheet is for it but here is a link to past auction records for an 1850 au-58 dollar

http://www.PCGS.com/auctionprices/d...=ms&c=29&g=0

You'll need to enter 58 into the grade box and click on the filter button. You can click on the links and view images of each coin when it was sold at auction. Personally I think this is a more realistic estimate of value than the grey sheet.

Here's a screen shot of what you'll find.

Thanks again tbone. I already checked the PCGS comps. Just curious if anyone had the grey sheet.

Surprised that no one had a grey sheet for this coin. A closer look at the comps provided by Heritage only adds more confusion. From my research, the fact that this coin is slabbed in a blue, pre-buyout, ANACS holder increases the probability that this coin was over-graded. So I dropped down to au-55 for comparable sales.

The following are links to them:
https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...Lot=1x=0&y=0
https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1237-3710.s
https://coins.ha.com/itm/a/1231-4323.s
https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...Lot=1x=0&y=0
https://coins.ha.com/itm/seated-dol...Lot=1x=0&y=0

The first two appear to have been 'dipped' including the one that sold for $5,170. The only example with 'original skin' seems to be the fourth one which sold for $2,820.

So I guess my question is, how the heck can you place any type of value on rare coins with any type of accuracy? Seems to me that the grey sheets would simply be guesses made by publications that are dependent on pushing monthly product.

My opinions:

1. The surfaces are prooflike, making it more attractive and thus more valuable. Could be dipped, but the reflectivity of the field could be making the color seem brighter than it actually is.

2. See #1, though #1 is by far the more-superior coin. This one almost certainly has been dipped.

3. Dipped, but retoned nicely. If you get one like this, most collectors would ignore the fact that it has been dipped. You really can't go wrong with one like this. It has enough white to maybe make it attractive to you, while enough color to appeal to almost everyone else.

4. This one has a very ugly mottled toning pattern (spotted blues and purples), which is why it went for so low.

We all have different taste in the look of the coins we collect. I'm sure for the person who has bid $3,300, this coin rocks. I kinda like the look of the coin. Would I buy it? No

Just noticed some bid fraud as this auction comes to a close. A new bidder upped the price from $3,300 to $3,975. The bid activity with the seller is 100%! Wow!
