Hello. My name is Mike and I'm in Western PA. I have inherited a coin collection from my Grandfather containing thousands of Wheat Pennies 1909 - 1958. I have them separated by year and in the process of determining grade. I am very familiar with pricing, grading-not too much. What should be my next step in selling the collection? Thank you in advance! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

...to the Forum! Since you inherited this collection from your Grandfather you should rethink the "selling the collection" mentality right now! How close were you and your Grandfather? Did he talk to you about the collection and his collecting interests. Once the coins are sold they are gone...all you will have are memories and a few hundred dollars to spend on something else. For the most part Wheat Cents will bring you a whopping 3 cents each for common date coins. Yes, a few dates will bring more...in some cases a lot more! If you are bent on selling the coins then buy a couple of good albums and take the time to put some sets together that you can cherish and pass on to your children one day. Once you pick out the best coins for your sets then sell your duplicate coins. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Thank you for the advice. My Grandfather was a clock maker and left the family many valuable clocks. He just collected Wheat Pennies for fun. I got all of them in old ammunition cases from him. I value many of them more than Three Cents though. Are you saying that number from experience?

Yes, I've bought and sold a few over the years...wholesalers pay about 3 cents each for common date wheat cents from the 1940's through the 1950's.
Common Wheaties in the teens through the thirties will bring more as will the key date coins.
Speaking of clocks...I have a windup 8-day clock that I got from my Parents after they died. It chimes on the hour and half hour and it is Sunday ritual for me to wind the clock. It is so soothing to hear that tick tock and chimes and know that my late Mom and Dad owned that clock and enjoyed it every day of their near 70 year marriage.

Glad to hear you cherish that clock. I certainly know how you feel about it as I have a few that I love.
Is there any other way to sell some of the collection not involving a wholeseller. I won't sell any of it if the majority pays just 3 cents...

You can always sell them on ebay, a flea market or set up at a coin show. Be aware that your selling expenses will most likely eat up all your profits. The buy/sell spread is not very wide on common date wheat cents.

, To CCF , If your grandfather threw them in ammunition cases this tells me he wasn't concerned with key dates . So I would not bother selling them for peanuts . My advice is keep them in the family , children ,grandchildren .etc. But definitely take them out of that metal box and holder the nice ones . all others can be sorted out in non PVC bags.

You said you have them sorted by year. What do you have for 1909, 1910, 1911, 1914, and 1922? List if they have no mint mark under the date, or if they have a D or an S under the date. If you can supply us with that information, it will make it a whole lot easier for us to offer you an opinion.

Mox is right - also look for mint-marked coins from 1912, 1913, 1915 and 1931. Let us know! to the CCF!

to CCF .... I hope we can help with all your questions. If you brought them into the shop I work ... the offer would be Two Cents each. I have seen some selling common wheat cents on ebay and getting between five and ten cents each. If you want to search through them. Check for mint makes coins from years 1909 through 1914. Also look for 1922, 1924 D, 1926 S, 1931 S. I might even pull any higher grade coins below 1935. If you find coin in those years you can try posting pictures of them on this site. Just for opinions on their grade and value.

Also look for pre-1935 dates from any mint with a trace of original luster on them!

I think we may have added so many dates/mints/grades we've scared the poor person away!
