Why is it that people refer to the 1977 nickel differently as far as the price and rarity. Charlton lists the low 7 as the better and others refer to the high 7. I know that neither are scarce. So which is it low or high? Or is the low rarer in higher grade or the high 7.

Hello pennypincher, You know of course, all coins are more valuable in higher grades than those in lower grades. The 1977 Canadian nickel has 2 varieties, one a 'low' 7 and the other a 'high' 7. I think, you will find the 'low' 7 is the most 'rare' if you want to call it that. I started keeping them a long while ago and ended up with 10 rolls. ..I don't know if they are worth anything or not, but I liked them.

If this is the case, why does Canadian Coin News say the High 7 is the scarcer one? If the 7 is level with the other numbers surely it should be the normal common one. This coin collecting is very confusing. Now I will have to put all my high 7's back into circulation and start looking for the regular ones. What caused this 7 business to happen in the first place ? So in reality there is no such thing as a low 7. There is a normal 7 which you think is the more uncommon and there is a high 7 and a double date 1977. Or is there a very low 7 out there waiting to be found? Why can't these books and magazines get it right and tell it the way it is? All clear as mud now. P.

Here is a real low 7, found 4 lows and 2 lows together. This 7 actually hangs lower then the 3rd. Not like the ones people claim to be a low 7
